Opening day of gun season for whitetail deer this morning. Warm and wet, very muddy and gnarly getting into our hunt camp. Lx700 OT never missed a beat.

Put my dad in a separate tent on the trailer, he snores and has to get up every few hours, good ol' prostate issues that I have to look forward to.

And I've just downed a small racked, big bodied 8pt. 🦌 💥 Meat on the table! 🍖

Pics to follow when I've got better signal.

Camp.

Always good to spend time with my dad. He's a good man, set me up well for life.

Despite $150,000 of gear, I like to pretend it's rustic 😂

Coffee time!

Bang! Meat in the freezer!

Finally figured out what the hole in front of the third row is for. Groceries!

And see the previous couple posts. This thing is not (only) a grocery getter ;)

Ok, I have a major complaint about this vehicle. This complaint is sourced from Doug Demuro's and Throttle House's comments on the modern 911.

It's a little boring.
-Muddy trails on a hunting property? Just handles it.
-Long road trip? Comfortable, quiet, and keeps your body from aches and sore spots. No drama, just delivers.
-Emergency at the hospital? Will do triple digits on the highway without complaint.
-wife, three kids, and gear for a beach trip? Everyone is happy and comfy with plenty of room.

It just works. It does everything without a shrug. I find myself looking at Grenadiers or 250's for a more rugged, ragged experience.

All of which to say that this is a wonderful vehicle. Even the engine with a 1% failure rate is a particular delight. Love its endless power, smooth running, and pleasant sound.

I’ve got a major complaint about your choice of bicycle brand. GAINT?! Smh…

Yep...this is the way Land Cruisers should be. As it happens, this one is just more modern and refined than the previous gens 200, 100, 80, etc.

Found a chink in the armor. Driving at my hunting lease on some gnarly sections, high centered a bit, backed up to take another line, smoke suddenly fills the cabin and comes from under the vehicle.

Somehow, a branch or rock or something snuck up in between the frame and factory skid and like an assassin lacerated one of the transmission fluid hoses. Thankfully, was able to trim it back, put it back on, and drive home and to the Lexus dealership for the transmission fluid to be filled back up. It is a sealed transmission unit, and so it takes some doing to get fluid back in it.

Skid plates are currently being investigated, Slee vs. dissent. Opinions welcome.

Incidentally, does this mean I'm the first guy to break one? 😂

Woah, must have been perfect placement!

Slee’s skids should be coming out by spring (hopefully).

I found that the stock at3s were wearing really fast for me. Maybe it’s my lead foot but there’s no way they would have lasted more than 15-20k. Granted I had around 10 days off-road with them.
I just found out this day that the OE Toyo AT3 is not the same as the one you buy off the shelf. OE is softer and has lower treads. Less sound, better ride more MPG for test drives, reviews and better MPG. They are 8k tires and zero warranty. I have been completely perplexed by the tread depth on my new LX and I went down the rabbit hole this am. I'm going to put on regular AT3s when I get back from whistler. Super annoying, but I honestly don't want blow outs this summer or even this winter (lots of bad stories about durability of OE version).

I've got 12k on mine, and they still have good traction in mud and rain. Tread is wearing thin, but not down to indicators yet.

I'll be replacing with bfg ko3's, but I expect will probably not do so until around 20k miles. They are doing fine for my use case.

And I've had tire blow outs with almost new Michelin ms's, and bfg KO2's. Hit a big enough piece of highway shrapnel, and you'll get a flat.

I'm close to 11k on the OEM tires. I do a 5 wheel rotation but will prob go to Nokian Outpost Nat for the next round

My rig is at Slee as we speak with new sliders and armor being put on. I'll post some pics.

Some thoughts:

Drove a grenadier for a week last May, enjoyed the rugged, tank like drive, linear acceleration, raw body-on-frame feel, and the steady, go anywhere and do anything capability.
IMG_1880.webp

Drove my colleague's 2023 ranger rover last week. Smooth, quiet, car like, but seats and center console flexed a bit on major road irregularities (Mississippi roads are second only to Africa's for most poorly maintained), and power delivery was equally wonky as my LX as the turbos and drive-by-wire controls tried to anticipate my needs.
IMG_3401.webp

My LX700OT slots right in between those two. It has the tank-like body on frame feel of the grenadier, but the smooth, quiet interior luxury of the Range Rover.

It's no perfect car, but the luxury of the Range Rover and tank-like quality of the Grenadier makes for a nice blend.

How was the steering feel with the Grenadier? Mostly what I hear is people annoyed with the constant steering fight in highway driving and the need to counter steer for yourself when going on turns. Also not having adaptive ACC or lane centering adds up to that complaint.

In my not-so-proud past, I had a Defender for about 2 years, before the warranty expired. Although not a BOF, I got to admit it had a very solid and well built feel to it. Similar to what I feel in the OT, but way less plush. Mine was a 2020, so a first-year model and still had several kinks that had to be fixed by the dealer. Let's just say I got to know my SA's name by heart. I can only assume they improved in the past 6 years. Still, it was a Land Rover and when the warranty was about to expire, I chickened out since the extended warranty was eye-gouging and I am not brave enough to own an LR product without a warranty.
