So what was the concensus from Gilson? Hopefully things are working your way and you will be able to get her on the road again soon.

Well, again I'm going to fix the truck myself. Gilson said they would put new doors on and paint them, and that was about it. That doesn't work for me cause it won't match and I'll always notice it... So I got the check for that damages and now I'll have to spend a bunch more time fixing it myself. Not happy to do that but it's all I've got at this point...

Plan is to remove the roof bars, fender flares, and weld up all the holes. Once the doors and body work are taken care of I'm going to have the entire truck painted.

That sucks. Hopefully it goes/ends well.

Jack

Yeah that definitely sucks. Love when shops will only do the minimum they can.
At least with you doing it you know the quality of work that you do and will be happy with the results, aside from painting that is.

Made a little progress today for about an hour of work. Removed all the flares and the roof bars. Going to try and weld up the front fender holes tomorrow. People seem to just weld them, but I plan on using a small section of sheet metal behind the holes. Removing the headliner will be interesting....

try a piece of brass or copper behind it with a mig, and go slow, you will be supprized what you can fill, the non ferrous metal acts as a heat sink and supports the molten metal. you could also cut small circles and then weld them in the hole.

if you order single stage dupont online, its about 350$ to do a truck the size of an fj80, the centari I used on the black truck is good for about 8 years in a dark color. White should last forever,

I have a huge piece of sheet metal in the garage, and I think ill just cut out a bunch of circles using the drill press and a 1/2" hole saw. I can reach all of the holes from the back so I should be able to get the holes filled up.

My concern is removing the headliner. It doesnt look like an easy task and I really havent found a thread on how to tackle it. Guess ill start pulling pillar panels and grab handles first.

Someone in Sac messaged me and said he has a set of white door skins for 100 each. Hopefully theyre in good shape!

smart move trying to cover any other color with white is a pain, have to take to metal and start over.. or it bleeds thru.. Good luck..

Matt,

How caved in is the outer door skin? I've used a football to push out the outer door skin in the past. Deflate football, stuff it inside the door, inflate it until the dent pops out.

Regarding filling up the FF holes, you can use a proper sized nail head and weld that to the hole. So, basically hold the nail with one hand and run a quick bead with the stinger.

The doors are completely smashed. I'm really surprised the windows still go up and down as much as try do. The bottom of both doors have nice folds in the metal, so they're trash.

Hopefully the guy in Sac has decent doors I can pick up soon.

My 60 went through similar circumstances.

I keep her parked on the street because of restricted parking in our complex.

Two summers ago I was keeping her on the shady side of the street under some trees to keep the sun damage to a minimum.
Unfortunately these trees also provided "protection" from the streetlights giving some motherf:censor: the cover needed to steal the front corner AND rear tail lights! And as an extra courtesy they cut the wires on the harness side taking the connectors as well! :censor:!!

Because of this incident I parked her across the street directly under a streetlight, hoping she would fare better. Well during/ after a storm some other motherf:censor: smashed their vehicle into my left rear tailigt, destroying it AND damiging the rear QP! The :censor: did not leave a note of course, hit and run! :censor: :censor: :censor:!!!

My poor 60 sat out there for a couple months months with no rear lights looking like a junker, until I found the parts needed for the price I was willing to pay.

Dang, that sucks too! Cruiser is parked in the garage now, so hopefully its safe in there...

All the flares are gone, and now all the holes in the roof are welded up. I cut out a bunch of small squares from a sheet of 16ga steel. Ill do the same with the fender flare holes.

Me too. It has a wider looking stance now that the flares are gone.

All the flare and roof rack holes are done. I removed the old doors and installed the new ones. The B pillar is bent in a bit and needs to be pulled out. Im going to take it to a body shop soon to have that done. Poor truck looks like a junk yard rig with all the random parts piled inside of it. Sucks not having any other place to put them...

Hey what tires are you running on the 80?

P.S.
Oh I am still trying to work Gaelen over to sell his Disco's and get a couple LCs..LOL

Theyre 315/75/16 Nitto Terra Grapplers. LOVE these tires. I plan on putting a set on my Tacoma sometime down the road.

I havent seen him in years! I always tell my Rover/jeep buddies to buy an 80.

Nice of course the tires I like and they dont make them in 15s! Seems like I am stuck with either going cheap for something like a Hankook DynaPro ATM RF10/Falken WildPeak ATS or expensive for Toyo Open Country AT IIs ($130ea vs. $200+ea).

I used to work with him and we still email and see each other once in a while. He was "helping" look for my cruiser by showing me Discos.. bastard. I need to get together with him and show him what an LC that is stock can do and put his Disco to shame LOL!

Actually we were talking one day about what I wanted to do with the LC and he said if I ever needed welding done or advice you were the man to see.

Excellent work as usual on the 80.

Greg, the nittos are great tires, but I saw you mentioned the falken wildpeaks, they are getting great reviews, I wouldn't discount them. There is a guy that owns Savvy off-road that has won several races on a set including his class in KOH. He does groove them, but the tires are off the shelf otherwise.

Yeah hard to beat for $130 a tire, only thing that worries me is that I have read some long term reviews that say after about half the tread life the center rib becomes completely flat and the tire likes to skate. But those are few and far between. Hankook DynaPro ATM RF10 is same price and looks pretty similar but with better siping.
