So as some might know I bought a truck - well most of a truck. I managed to find a rust free FJ60 around Seattle and decided to give it a good home. I have what I need to start off with which is a good rust free body, frame and that's it. No interior, no fenders (I do have some off another parts truck), and no engine. Since this will likely (and realistically) be a 1 year project I am in no rush to buy everything that I need but I figured I might as well start looking. The other thing is that I have to save my pennies for all of the goodies.
Here is what I am going to need for now, so if someone comes across it, please let me know:
13BT with H55 & T case.
80 series diffs ( I might have a line on those but who knows).
dash top off an 62 or 60, preferably gray and in good condition, otherwise I can use my old one - are they interchangable? or is the mounting totally different.
rear split windows (would be nice but not necessary)

This list will get much bigger as time goes by.

Thanks

Go with a 1hz. The 13b-t might work, but the 1hz will have lots of parts available for years and years.

Coils are much better too.

Funny you say a 1yr project. I started with 2 months as my goal. I am now 2.5 yrs in. I might have 5 weeks to go to make sure I make Moab on time.

I have been debating on my engine choice for a while and the reason for going with the 13BT is that I want something that is simple, reliable, all mechanical and easy to fix. I am familiar with the 3B, I know that parts are going to start being a problem but I also know that it is an engine that if treated properly will work for many years. I don't need to go fast, hell it's a landcruiser. The less crap on it that can break the better, my 3B is coming up on 500,000kms and still strong (knock on wood), that is proof enough of a good engine. If I do come across a sweet deal on a 12HT or 1HZ with a manual transmission then I am not going to say no, but my first choice is a 13BT.
Since there is some interest in the suspension then I'll share my idea, I am trying to do with air suspension/links all around. There are some nice choices for durable off-road proven air bags with bump stops and it allows me to have full control of the ride height as well as comfort.

The 1HZ is the new 3B. indirect injected, simple and non turbocharged. Basic diesel engine.

I don't think one or the other would be a bad choice. The 1HZ is sold in Canada for all those mines, from ENS. So support is there. And will be for a long time.

Nice think with a 13b-t is it bolts right in to your truck. Rebuild your H55f and transfer case to attach to it. Mounts, crossmembers etc are all the same. As is the driveshafts.

The 1HZ might take a lot more work to get in there, as rad, mounts, shroud ...etc will be different.

The modifications are not going to be hard, I have to make new engine mounts anyways as the FJ frame has different ones, so couple of other things to do is not a big deal. I'll expand my search to include both - anyone have a lead on either engine with transmission and case?

Pass on the 12HT and definitely pass on the auto. If I am going to go the 6 cylinder route then I might as well go for something newer. I guess the biggest deciding factor will be availability and price between a 13BT and a 1HZ. As for a TD4.2 - thought about going the route of different manufacturer engines but I am a Toyota guy at heart, besides, there is more Toyota diesels and parts floating around here then anything else. If I would do something different it might be a Hino engine (which is still a Toyota) but then I have to figure out which tranny and case to use....more headaches then it's worth. I will have a hard enough time with the ideas I already have.

So I started doing some work on the body already, it had a couple of dents that I got out - I love Uni-spotters!

go talk nicely to Granite grinder, After his mix-match build I bet he has 3or 4 trannys for you:D

Matt I know of a 13BT H55F and a SPLIT case around 160,000KM . Is that the 60 I pointed out to you?

Well there an idea....

How about going newer hino, like a big B series engine. 15b-t or 14b-t.

I have seen a couple rigs on here with those engines. That would be fun having the newest and biggest B series engine. Wonder if Greg/Sheldon can get those...?

There is a Hino shop not far away from my place where I can get more info, the only thing that might be an issue is a transmission and transfer case, I guess some kind of adapters can be made but I would not know until I had the thing in front of me. It's on the list for doing more research.

diesel's and coils are gay.. go bags and a small block..:flipoff2::skull:
