Recently acquire my 4runner almost completely stock. Except for the butcher of a job to the wiring. Will probably be installing a new wiring harness to the engine , stereo system and the windows. But other than that she runs great and everything pretty much works as it should. Will be a daily driver so ill be replacing most of the bearing, rebuilding the hubs and the lil stuff. Probably will gut the interior and start from scratch. But overall for $2200 I think I got a good steal. Plus there is hardly a speck of rust on the whole vehicle.

Good looking 4Runner you picked up and a good price. Maybe you can luck out at a Pull A Part yard or something for a non butchered up wiring harness ($15.00 is what they charged me for mine) It took me most of the morning to pull from the donor vehicle but was well worth it.

So. Thinking of taking the plunge and rebuilding my engine. With a master rebuild from engine builder. Any words of wisdom. This will be my first rebuild so wish me luck. Saving now for the kit and will be pulling the engine probably in the next week or so.

Is the engine that bad off that? Most guys that I know that sunk $$ into a rebuild ended up spending more than they thought and in the end were not satisfied with the 4 cylinder rebuild (seems like they all thought they would get a lot more power after the rebuild) and it just wasn't there. .02

Not looking for much on the rebuild for power more d/t the engine has 245k on it and needs a lil reviving. The engine is doing well but need all new gasket and I figured since I have to pull the engine might as well rebuild it while its out. And maybe get some life back out of it. Or at least that's what I hope. I know the 22re aren't known for power but this one is struggling a lil when it comes to hills and such. But overall it's still running good for now. Just want to make it a lil more reliable to be a DD.

Well was hoping on starting the rebuild a lil quicker than this but looks like I will have to wait for about another month. Had to replace the starter on my 100 series LC (and that sucks btw if u have never done one on a LC) anyways now I'm goin OOT for two week the end of the week and don't want to start something this big and have to leave in the mid of it so probably will be end of nov before I get to it.

So here a question I need help with. I'm bout to purchase my master rebuild kit from enginebldr My question is should I put my money into a new street head from them or should I get a new header from lce. Trying to figure out which with give mt the most improvement for the money. Stay with stock head and put new header or put a new street head with stock headers. May end up getting both but for right now only have the money for one or the other. Any suggestion???

Go with the new head, the stock Toyota exhaust manifold is Very well designed, you will get more from a better head and cam then the header. The most restrictive part of the 22RE is the air intake, from the air flow meter to the intake plenum.

I would also vote for the new head now, if you're sure you need it. It's much easier to upgrade the exhaust later, but a lot more work (and expense) to swap the head later.

I disagree on the value of the header though. I definitely think it's worth the expense, as long as you also upgrade the rest of the exhaust to 2-1/4" and a decent muffler.

I bought the same "master" kit from Ted, it's decent stuff. Truthfully, I only used the pistons, bearings, and cam. I sold off the timing kit, gasket set, and oil pump. I bought an OEM gasket set, timing chain, and tensioner, plus new valve tappets.
