hey dirty toad how much did the shop charge you to make the cat replacement? i have all the raw metal, just not the equipment to cut the flanges and only part of the skill to weld it together...

So in a de-smog, how does one use the US smog built carb? wouldnt it be best to use a Non US stock carb without all the vacuum horse s***?

Negative, the US version works just fine. Nothing is required other then plugging a few ports.

You plug a few ports, then send it to Jim C. For a desmog rebuild along with your dizzy

Great info!

Toad and others...If you could take a couple more pics of the engine bay, I think it would help w/ the vac line mystery.

I'm in the process of dumbing down my 85 2F and everything was running good until I accidentally switched a couple connected to the metal spaghetti tubes. I really am anxious to see how much more I can actually remove.

Thanks in advance!:beer::beer::beer:

Kavik, If I can get home a day this week, and still have daylight, I'll snap a coupld of pics of my metal spaghetti. but there is a diagram I followed I think it might be posted earlier in this thread, if not it is in the tech section here on mud. It's pretty straight forward, and should get you there.

I went to a custom fab shop because (if I already said this I am sorry) all the muffler shops said they would not do it for leagal reasons. :flipoff2:

They charged me $50. They cut the flanges off the cat and put them on a new piece of metal. sounds fawking sweet!!

As for more pictures. I will get more when the wife brings it back from Cali, I am back home in CO.

And a bit more info that I don't think I have posted anywhere else yet.
I took a trip from Encino to San Diego a few days after the desmog was done and got 16 miles to the gallon. That included a lot of traffic (read: rolling in first gear for 10 miles), so I can only imagine what it will be like with all high speed highway driving. That is the best milage she has ever gotten, like ever dude!

16 mpg! Dang! My cruiser has only gotten that once. And we were windows down with heat blasting and traveling maybe 55 miles an hour. It had a bad overheating problem in the past. It's all good now though.

I can't wait to tear into mine and get my headers on. I don't have time with school because I need my car. I don't think I could go without it.

Yeah, I've been trying to find a muffler shop to do this for me, and it hasn't been working out, maybe I'll just buy a length of exhaust pipe, and cut and attach the flanges myself.....?

Not to tell you not to do the headers, but I was talking with Kurt over at SOR and he said that if you do them you will be fighting an intake leak FOREVER. They sell headers and there main mechanic says not to do it... I didn't do it on mine because I am sick of taking off the intake manifold.

Just my .02

I've replaced my intake gasket twice, he's 100% correct on a never ending battle.

Is that true for every single header made for the 2F?

I have the SOR Hi-Tech Headers made by Edelbrock exclusively for SOR. They workmanship is very nice. They are also a two-piece design.

I searched all over and these were the nicest I could find. If anyone knows about them give a shout out.

I did mine ye ol' redneck way. I pulled the cat out and used a big prybar to break-up the catalyst until it is just a big empty chamber. This is not as efficient as a delete pipe because it allows exaust gasses to expand, but I'm sure it's better than it was b4:rolleyes:

can anyone tell me what the two wires coming out of the cat do? I clipped them to no effect.

I was told that you could get some big money for that "temp sensor" that you cut the wires to. New it goes for more than $200

I am going to follow mine back to the computer and pull the whole thing. Then put it on MudBay ;)

Just thought I would contribute...

My truck ran horrible after trying to get it to pass AZ emissions...

I just finished a desmog per JimC's diagram.

Verdict - Truck runs/idles smoother and stronger than ever!

Tuneup:
  • New fuel filter
  • new NGK(factory spec) plugs
  • spot on valve adj (all were tight)
  • 16+ hg on vac guage
  • about 10-11 deg advance.

Desmog status:
  • Air rail still in place - hose connected to exhaust tube on fenderwell
  • removed all EGR components and made block off plate for rear of exhaust manifold
  • Rubber cap on EGR tube into intake
  • Only vacuum hoses still connected are to choke breaker, choke opener, evap valve, and AC idle up
  • removed metal spaghetti pipe thingy
  • capped off all extra pipes exiting th carb
  • Will cap off extra openings in the air cleaner soon (reconnected vent side of choke opener and evap valve to the little pipes)

Kavik,

Would you post some pictures so I can see how it looks?

Also so I can drool over it, and motivate my butt to do it.

I'll try to get some this weekend. You will be amazed how few hoses it take to keep her running.

Did you keep the HAC (high altitude compensator) in place?

I am about to pull the carb off and do a re-torque on the intake bolts (recommended after 1000 miles by everyone I have talked to), so I will take some GOOD pics at that point and post them.
