Ok, I lied, no pics tonight, got dark a little faster than I expected.

That's not a hijack.

What I have left to do. I need to find the allen head bolts for the air rail. I read that Jim C. had them available, I pm'd him but have not heard back. JIM ARE YOU OUT THERE?? I know he is a very busy man, doing quality cruiser work, so I have not pushed the subject.

I too have pm'd him, and am getting a similar response. He must be busy. I hope he contacts us soon. I really want to drive her again...soon!

Just got mine back from "a friend" and wow... Maybe I had an air leak before or a bad diaphram in in the old carb but WOW:eek: I just now realize what I've been missing for the past 5 years. I will be glad to take a picture or two if it helps. Let me know.

hey fowldarr how is it coming?

As for me. I got all my part back from Jim C today and they look great. I started to put everything back together today.

So far I have removed the cat and replaced it with a straight pipe, replaced the intake/exhaust manifold gasket, removed EGR and all the metal parts that go with it, and installed the allen bolts that Jim C sold me.

All I have left to do is reinstall the Dizzy, carb, and figure out which vacuum lines need to be reattached. Even with all those diagrams I am a bit confused. I may see if Dynosoar can come over and give me a hand (we are in Cali for the holidays)

Tomorrow should be a good day for us!

pics? none at this time. I will take a bunch tomorrow, just so you all can see what fun I had.

Sounds like things are going pretty well for you Dirty Toad.

I myself am about to start pulling things apart and install my new headers.

Let me start by thanking Buddha, for with out his guidance I would never have been able to make it this far :p

It is done folks! She runs better than ever! Holy cow! I can not say enough about this. I got it running yesterday and drove all around L.A. making sure it would be good for some off-roading in Fraiser Park today. She has more power, better torque, and sounds fawking killer!

Jim C is the Man! Worth every penny.

I will post up pics later with a description of what I took out.

Cant wait to hear it!
Pics will be nice too!

Nice looking pup in your avatar!

I'll try to get some pics up too, but I got a little sidelined. My goal was to keep mine running while I did it. So far I've been successful. I want to get everything done then send of the carb and dizzy to Jim C., Replace my exhaust manifold and put in the allen head bolts while it's down, and straight pipe the cat (I may need to do the entire exhaust, I think I have a hole pre-cat). Just need to recover from my wife's christmas shopping spree. On the brightside, it currently runs better than ever.

Dirty Toad, I think I have a handle on the vacuum lines, so PM me if you need anything.

OK, here is what I did. I will start with some pics.

1. The new Carb back in its home.

2. a close up of the welded shut egr pipe.

3. The "way too much money, but cheaper/less time consuming option for replacing the failed air pump.

1. The New home for the High Altitude Compensator and deceleration valve (I think that is what the second one is called. Ya know, that one that stops her from back firing.)

2. What I HAD to get after draining the old battery too many times. ;)

Now for a brief summery of what I did. Well, I will try to be brief, but the wife seems to think I am a bit long winded.

The Toad had an intake leak, which led me to the discovery of a jacked up smog system, which made me just want to tear it all out of there, which I felt compelled to do.

So I started by removing the intake/exhaust manifold, sent the carb and dizzy to Jim C (fj40jim), removed the smog pump and realized it was worthless even as a pulley, removed all the vacuum lines and air rail. removed the entire exhaust system in front of the cat.

Then had the exhaust manifold hole that recirculated exhaust back to the smog stuff welded shut. Put a block off plate on the port that comes off the #6 cylinder exhaust and feeds down to the EGR cooler. Welded the EGR inlet shut and cut the pipe that sticks into the intake much shorter so it disturbs the intake flow that much less (not sure if this makes a diff at all, but it made me feel better). Took the cat to a fab shop and had a straight pipe made.

Then I got the Carb and Dizzy back from Jim C :D
I put the intake/exhaust back on with a new gasket (felpro), reinstalled the whole exhaust system with the new straight pipe :grinpimp:, put on the air pump deleat pulley, put the carb back on, and reinstalled the dizzy.

Then Dynosoar came over and helped me plum the vacuum system with the HAC & decel things in place.

The next day I got a timing light & set it to 7 degrees and she purrrrrrrrrs like a kitten. At no point while we have owned this vehicle has it run this smooth or at this low an RPM. And like I mentioned b4, the exhaust sounds fantastic! I will have to do a video & post it on youtube.

Thanks again to Dynosoar and Jim C, for with out them, and Buddha, I would never have completed this project and had it turn out as well as it has.
:cheers::banana::wrench:

It's looking good man. Real Good. I'm a little jealous we started about the same time, but you've jumped ahead of me. What did you use to plug the egr pipe prior to welding it? I'll be doing that soon.

I went to the local metal shop and got a scrap piece of metal bar that fit just right. I don't know what size it was because I took the EGR pipe with me and just shoved stuff in it until I found the right one.

Looks good DT! What a difference the desmog makes, Huh? Was that carb new or rebuilt by Jim? I don't remeber mine being that shiney after being rebuilt, it looks new! Any plans for a header?

Thanks, I'll do the same.

So in a de-smog, how does one use the US smog built carb? wouldnt it be best to use a Non US stock carb without all the vacuum horse s***?
