My Continuous SMOG and Emissions Problems

Failed in 86 wagon yesterday. Very close but unsure what to address here. A simple tune up, a new cat converter? Any assistance would be appreciated.

High CO levels usually means running rich.

Air Cleaner new?

How old are the CATs? Original?

Has the carb ever been rebuilt?

Cleaner is not that new. Maybe a year? Overdue on that already. No idea about the cats. I have owned it for almost 15 years and never messed with it. Pretty certain the carb is original. It runs like a top, nice and smooth. Thinking of starting with a tune up and using my retry after that. If it fails then I guess it's down to George in Stockton for a once over.

Yeah, that sounds reasonable. A tuneup with mix adjust may help. But if you've got the original CAT it almost certainly is time for a new one.

Good to know. Never thought much about it and it's never come up in my smog battles before. I will look into that. Might as well get the tune-up and start there as I imagine that's a little cheaper than a cat.

If you do end up with a new CAT - Get the Magnaflow bolt-in Kalifornia (CARB compliant) one. And don't take it to a generic muffler shop for that- they will cut the Thermosensor off and just weld-in a universal CAT. Let Georg do it right.

Good luck - Smog testing in Kalif is Biatch!

Buddy had similar prob in his 84. He says test the input output temp from your CAT- should be about 75-100deg more on way out.

Yes it is getting tougher all the time. Really takes the fun out of it. If I don't pass with a tune-up it's definitely going to George! How do you know when the cat is bad? Mine smells of exhaust when running . Is that a symptom? Or is it a mixture issue?

I will have a shop do that during the tune-up. Thanks. Don't know many shops in 916 that will do the work. Leaning towards Al Price's place on s St.

You can test a CAT by the temperature method stated above, but if you have an original CAT they are way restrictive and most likely junk. New OBDII compliant type are much more free-flowing and efficient.

Smell could be a number of things. Best to have it checked if you're smelling exhaust.

NOx is directly related to the function of the EGR valve and the catalytic converter. NOx passed - but by a hair. That number is too high. It should be down around the 300s or so. If the valve is working (easy tests to check in the emissions FSM) then the likely culprit is the cat / since CO is high too.

Also make sure that the base ignition timing is NOT set higher than 7° BTDC. If the tech doesn't check the timing (most have no idea where to check on this engine) maybe try setting it a few degrees more retarded for the test. Like 5°.

Lots of great information here but i am afraid it's a bit out of my league. i am going to start with a tune-up and oil change as it needs it anyhow and cant hurt. if it fails then i am on to finding other sources of the problem.

I'll take the problem off your hands ...

:D
