Ya, I knew it could happen. I was warned. We were on our way to Silver Star Mnt for a couple of days of boarding. From the Island we got almost to Kamloops when the water temp pegged and I knew it was game over  . She boiled good and blew out half it's anti freeze.
Put a damper on our vacation to say the least. I had to return from home with a trailer and drag her back to where she now sits in the garage while I deside what to do.
I had replaced the rad, water pump, thermostat and timing belt as well as installed a pyro and water temp gage. The fan clutch worked properly and had the Toyota red stuff in the rad also. The 2.5 in. exhaust mod was my next plan. Obviously these improvements didn't quite do the trick.
I was advised at this point to push it off a cliff (thanks Wayne) but damm, I love this little rig and I think I'll try a new head and do the exhaust mod. Seems you just can't use them for long hwy cruises and if you keep them in town or local trails you will be OK.
I guess I'm looking for a 3L head now. Alberta, Australia or Japan??
What do you guys think. Let me know

We should start a Cracked 2LTE Head Association

Thanks

Keith,

after seeing the thread on the rolled 78 i thought maybe you took my advice after all...
you can get a 3L head from Dan at 4wheelauto.com
<warning, the brand new head i have on my wifes bush LJ78 is now starting to head into the "it shouldn't be THERE" zone already and it has been less than a year since install>

IF you are going to keep this unit for short hauls and around town then go for it, if you are going to be doing the choqu then save your money for another unit...

around town these are great little rigs, highway driving in Canada will kill them...

glad you got the beastie home, sorry for the bad news

Don't bother with the new head - what about a conversion? 1HZ or 13BT? You'll be into it for what 3-5K by the time you get the engine rebuilt.. Otherwise you might be right back int he same boat.

A real shame they used those engines - pure junk no matter what you do them.

Regards,

I might be inclined to try and find a rotten ole BJ60 and stick the 3b into your prado. Or like said above, use a 13b-t...

Then you can work it hard out there....on them hills. Still slowly though

a 13BT will need a different tranny and unless i am mistaken he has an auto...
so a 13BT with auto tranny and he will be into it for much more than $5000...a 1HZ will not fit with out changing to a HD sheet metal front end which will add to the cost of a 1HZ and tranny, plus suspension upgrade to handle the weight and i am doubtful the rear diff will stand the torque of the 1HZ...
also with the 4.9 both those engines will be over 3000 RPM on the highway...

www.allhead.com.au or Toy stealership part # 54121 (2l series) 54131 (for 3L) but I dont know for sure if you can get the 3L in canada - I couldnt get it 2 yrs ago, but then I heard someone on another forum said they got a 3L from California Toy Parts warehouse?? Those #s are off the top of my head (no pun intended) so you should check them.
Good luck,
Johnny

i am very sorry to hear what happened
cant the 13bt bolt up to the a343 put in 80 front coils to handle the weight isnt the 78 rear diff like a74 but not a full floater i might have a spare 13bt that i was going to put in my 40 that fawkin sucks i put 2000km a week on my prado
intercooled via 89 prbe gt inter and its holding up fine 180f is as hot as she will
go after the thermostat mod and pure antifreeze red but then i got other problems

Go for the 1KZ-T(E) if you can get one over there.
1HZ wont fit without changing tranny, propellers and a few other staff like the hole front body work. 1KZ will bolt straight in.

If you´re ready to do the big step, look around for an outworn HDJ80 and the 7series heavy duty front body work and built youre own HDJ77 :D

I´ll do this to my KZJ77 - at some time...

Cheers

Michael

the rear diff is similar to the mini truck diff.
80 series coils might do the trick.
the imput shaft is different...

2LTE will die, it chooses when, not the owner.

I have been curious about this for a while - what other engines, available in Canada, would be good swaps? Easier the better, and preferably diesel, although my '84 toyota pickup would get 29mpg IIRC with a 22R

@Whistler74

Friend of mine swapped his dying 2L-T2 against a 2C-T out of a Toyota Corolla.
Bolts also straight in, mostly the same power and torque, but fuel consumption decreased.
He´s driving her since 4 years now and he´s still happy...

Greetings

Hello

I too got a '91 Prado and get nervous when I see the demise of so many trucks from just normal driving. Wayne is right about these being short run type units..for city use. Most of the driving in Japan is like that or spent in traffic....The 2lte had a bad reputation in Japan too though.
Some people in this thread suggested the KZ 3 litre engine. This plan has always been in the back of my head as I drove a Prado with that engine for 4 years while I lived in Japan. The difference in power is night and day. And I did quite a bit of highway driving there too. Also the 91 feels much lighter.
I have heard that when buying a KZ that its a good idea to buy a set engine/tranny. Why? I dont know. Does the KZ actually bolt up to the 91? Thus the tranny not required? I have heard yes..and no.
I was hoping that someone who has actually done the transplant could weigh in and tell us the real scoop. I was chatting to Randy in Okinawa before I imported my rig and he has a buddy over in Japan that knows all this stuff (toyota guru). If you are reading...Please fill us lowly LJ owners in.

Thanks
Kevin
