The smaller machines like the bob cats will fit on a 45 or 1/2 ton. “Big blue” needs at minimum a 3/4 ton. If your liking full service welding rig with all tools and stands, clamps bottles and consumables, your well into 1 ton truck territory.

IIRC. a new big blue 400 is just over a 1000lbs with fluids and full of fuel. Add 150lbs for 125’ of welding leads. It does not take long to get really heavy really fast.

Don't think for one second that I haven't thought about making my Dingo build into a trail repair rig....

I've been running the everlast storm stick/mig/plasma machine hard for the last 4 years, still works great. the only machine i saw with 2 gas solenoids so you can leave the gas hooked and air hooked up all the time.

Do you/your son have a plasma already?

It is year 3 or 4 of me going to buy the Primeweld 225 for TIG... :) I also regret I've got a 110v MIG only because my garage didn't have 240 back then. Little I knew you find another phase quickly once the breaker starts tripping every 7 seconds.
