Hey guys, I have to move from Vic (Sooke actually) to Mission for work, and I need a way to move the 40. I need to be out of my place in Sooke by March 15th or so, but it could be any time in the next 2 weeks really.

I looked up Uhaul for a car dolly, but the website says the towed vehicle has to be inspected which isn't gonna happen. Waiting for word on that from the local store.

So... Anyone able to trailer a 40 to Mission? Dolly would be fine too, it's rolling but not driveable. Or recommendations on a company that could do it for a reasonable price?

Cheers,
Drew

Did you see if Uhaul had a flat deck trailer? You could also ask the local BCAA company, they sometimes have trucks going back and forth, might do it for a flat fee to drop it off at a storage yard. Rent a cube van and see if it fits?

The 40 would fit on either a flatdeck or a dolly, I'm just wondering about the inspection thing. It's starting to look like it's the tow vehicle that has to be inspected and not the towed one, which makes more sense. I'd love to just sling it up behind the moving truck and be done.

Cube van made me LOL, Thanks. :)

Uhaul also has trailers better than the dolly's... U have to disconnect your rear driveshaft if u use the car dolly

You should be able to just tow it behind the moving van. Trailering would get better brakes and reduce risks of complications. Sometimes better if they don't know how heavy your 40 is ;)

sent you a PM

Check whether the towed vehicle has to be insured also. If on a trailer, the trailer insurance covers the cargo I think.

Thanks for the input guys, I finally talked to a person at uhaul today. Since it's behind one of their trucks, there's no inspection needed. They just want to inspect your tow vehicle to make sure it's up to it. I might still change it to a flatdeck for the better braking and safety, and I'm not sure if I have to insure it on a dolly. Also have to figure out if I can use their tire straps with 33x12.50s (31 actual) or figure something else out. My only concern with the flatdeck is getting it on there, but I've got a rope hoist I could use I guess. The disadvantage of a PTO winch. :frown: Maybe now that I'm employed I can finally start working on this :censor: 40.

Cheers,
Drew

I would get a trailer... I'm pretty sure dollie you have to be insured.

I used one of the uhaul trailers before and got some hefty tiedown straps and tied down both axles instead of the tires... although I would recommend trying to ratchet off the frame depending on height/suspension because my truck sways alot if I just tiedown axles.

I think that's looking like the best option now. If I go dolly I'll have to figure out lights which the 40 doesn't have right now, plus probably find some smaller tires so I can strap it down with their tire straps. On a flatdeck I have lights and brakes, and I'll just get some beefy straps and tie the axles down. The springs don't really move, they're stock. :) It was on a flatdeck tow truck tied to the axles when I moved from Langford to Sooke and I didn't really see it swaying at all. I can winch it on to the trailer with either the ratchet straps or my rope hoist.

EDIT: Ok, did some reading on towing and trailering. Consensus seems to be strapping the axles is better. If you strap the frame it can wear on the straps or loosen them from the bouncing unless you get 'em REAL tight. Best to strap the axles and let the suspension work.

the uhaul tire ratchet straps will be too short to work on your 33x12.50. I moved one of my trucks by running the tire strap over the axle instead, worked great, but watch you don't crush the brake line. Easier to throw on a coulple stock sized front tires. Agree that the ratchet straps to frame doesn't really work too well. over the axles does no problem.

I decided to move 2 non-runners across the province with me. Initially wanted to flat tow with just a towbar and lights, but then just went with a cube van and car trailer from uhaul. Actually the idea of a ramp and loading one 40 into the moving van did cross my mind. They don't have a very good anchor point on the floor to snatch block/winch from unfortunately :hillbilly:
