Good golly.

Slipped out to the shed for couple of hours tonight, once the dinner time mayhem had abated. Masked off of a few bits and hung the rest of the stuff I had sand blasted and got it into primer. I'm going to have to set up some sort of extraction system, before I top coat any of this stuff or its just going to end up covered in over spra. and will look dull and shabby.

You're quickly becoming the postmaster, PF!

G'day Guys, Well I didn't get much shed time during the week. The sandblasting had revealed a small section of rust in the chassis just above the rear suspension shackles. I thought, I was going to get away with it, as I couldn't see any holes but after blasting it was pretty obvious.

I remade this little bracket some time ago and it covers the patch. I was a bit worried that some of the pitting might trap water, so I spread a little filler over the patch this morning and sanded it out tonight after dinner. I also spread some filler on the couple of the brackets and plates that attach the front bumper and then gave them a sand and a coat of high fill primer. I was going to try and get the chassis in top coat tomorrow but I don't think I'll get time.

G'day again, I got down to the shed for an hour or so this evening and re-attached the cross member to the chassis that holds up the spare wheel. I order to get to the rusty section of frame and the rusty bracket next to this this cross member I had to grid out some buck rivets that help attach the rear suspension shackle bracket thingy to the chassis. Having normal bolt head would have looked terrible so I had a local machinist turn down the head of some 12mm high tensile bolts. These are them.....

This is a shot taken from underneath the chassis with the bolts in place. Once I had them in place I welded a second nut onto the top of the bolt while I tighten them up. I then cut of the second nut and for good measure welded a bead around the top of the nut to hold it in place. I reckon with a coat of paint it should look okay.

Another couple of shots. I really wanted to get the chassis in top coat over the weekend, because the weather was great. Hopefully, next weekend the Land Cruiser Gods will be look after me and get a couple of hours in. I've also got to work out some sort of extraction system in the old garden shed spray booth, so I don't cover everything in over spray. In the bottom photo you can see where I rubbed back some of the epoxy primer. From factory each of the brackets had about an 1" of weld upper and lower..........then I ran out of welding wire. It always happens at night........very frustrating.

G'day Mudders, Not much to show for my efforts tonight. Didn't escape the office until late. I gave the horns that help mount the front bumper a wet sand and then attached them to the chassis, using a few more bolts that I had machined to look like buck rivets. I grabbed the head of the bolt in some vice grips. I was a bit worried that this score up the head or slip and cause me a bunch of frustration, but they clamped down pretty hard. I gave'em a smear of locktite and used nylock nuts, hopefully they'll hold. I started to bolt on the radiator support brackets, but it was getting cold and late and lonely in shed and I started to think about work, so I decided to call it a night............plus I didn't want my negative work thoughts impacting Mario's good karma.

G'day Cult,

Too funny. You are correct. I should be ashamed of myself........hammertone sucks. I promise no more hammertone!

Not much too show for my efforts over the last couple of nights and no photos. I finished bolting the radiator support brackets onto the chassis and gave them a quick dry sand, then clean up the shed a bit. Does anyone know if you can spray epoxy primer over high fill primer? I want to prime the heads of the bolts I just installed. I suppose it would be easier to just given them a quick lick with some etch primer.

Cheers,

Ben

Well not much to show for the last week or so. I spent a majority of last weekend splitting wood for winter. The chassis is ready for paint and during the week I had a morning off work and the sun had come out, so I raced down to the shed and wiped down the chassis with prep wash and dragged it outside. I was set up ready to go and as I dragged the compressor outside I accidentally knocked it over and fractured this little copper pipe so packed everything up and put it all away. Bummer. I got that fixed tonight, so hopefully tomorrow morning it will stop raining and I can finally spray some top coat.

I also spent a couple of nights standing in front of the wire wheel cleaning up nuts and bolts from the front axle ready to drop off at the plater on Monday. This is always a heap a fun. Every so often a nut or bolt will slip out of the pliers and the wire wheel will shot it across the shed like a 303 round. Also the wire from the wire wheel occasionally breaks loose and act like little harpoons, sticking into your face and forehead. I haven't seen this before, but some of the nuts are directional. They have a chamfer around the top and are embossed to show top from bottom.
