You want to risk your life with a $40 HF piece of crap:D

no. so how is it better then?

It's made in the USA, in Newark Ohio:) Not made in China.

We used these at my Dad's Crane and Hoist shop and they are better than the average come-along. We had them on all our service trucks and used them to drag small loads from the back of the bed where the forklift set it down into the front, over the axle.

We used them in the field occasionally too.

They say the 3 ton model can pull 6 tons on a horizontal plane. I would call that a poor mans hand winch.

"The More Power Puller® has been manufactured by The Wyeth-Scott Company since 1934. We are proud to state that it is the safest and most durable puller ever made. This heavy-duty industrial hand ratchet puller/hoist is not the type of light-weight puller found at most home centers or discount stores - it has been designed and proven to perform in a variety of demanding environments without bending, breaking or collapsing.

Please compare the construction of The More Power Puller® to other pullers. The components are made of solid, thick cast iron - not aluminum. The cable is 5/16" flexible wire rope - not the more common 1/4" (or smaller) aircraft cable. The More Power Puller® is not light-weight like other brands. Our puller is 27 pounds of iron and steel.

The design of The More Power Puller® hasn´t changed much in over 70 years (why change a good thing?). This puller will last for generations. We regularly service pullers that are 30 to 55 years old, and often, all they need is a new cable or spring. We are confident you will find The More Power Puller® to be reliable, safe and heavy duty tool that will prove to be indispensable."

I really like the idea of getting a hand winch and I've found this thread to be really helpful. But I'm still a bit confused as to how the Black Rat/Magnum/Tifor style is better/worse than the old school Power Puller. Any thoughts from anyone who has used both? The Power Puller seems to offer all the strength of the others at half the price. Couldn't I just buy a Power Puller and an ARB extension strap for 60 bucks and still be saving myself 100 bucks over the Tifor/Magnum style (if I needed to run a longer line)? Perhaps the Magnum is a bit more compact/lighter? For what it's worth, I'm favoring either model over an electric winch (which seems like overkill for my type of driving), so I'd love to hear some real world user's thoughts.

Synthetic Rope with PowerPull?????

Is it possible to use a synthetic cable with this type of unit? Lighter weight, longer cable, safer in case of cable failure, floating line, etc.??????

Thanks

I know it's been 5 years since the last posting on this thread, but I'm a newbie who's been grappling with the whole winch issue the last few weeks and came across this today.

https://www.wyeth-scott.com/index.asp

They now offer one with Amsteel Blue synthetic rope. No more fear of death from a whipping steel cable. Dern, I just ordered an ARB Recovery Damper an hour ago. Well, maybe I'll get some use out of it somewhere.

They now make the Power Puller with synthetic rope with a 13,000 LB+ rating and the puller still does 3 tons vertical, 6 tons horizontal for under $300. I'm seriously considering ordering one at their intro pricing which ends in two weeks (March 22, 2011). 35 feet of rope too - much better than 6 feet though not quite as good as infinite feet.

Cheers! :)

i have one. It is awesome. nothing like a home depot come along. This is a real, heavy duty tool. I have 125 feet of cable off of a warn winch that i bought on mud that i use as an extension if need be. Great tool.

Awesome. I did actually go and buy it online same day after speaking with a lady there. I bought a handle extension and an extra handle as it is the fail point and designed to bend before the winch does. I also picked up some of their 5/16 steel choker cables with the loops on each end. I think I got 2x5' and 1x50' since I was already paying for shipping the 30lb winch. Guess I'll hang the ARB damper on the cables when I use them. I have a feeling we'll be very happy with it and where else can you get a new 6-ton winch with 35 ft of pull for under $300?

looks like a great tool indeed.
Pretty big to carry inside with a full load though. and you want is well secured if you do.

My spare is in my rear, and i keep the puller in the wheel under the strapped down spare. the handle goes in the tool box. Also strapped down.

Yes, people keep mentioning to me about securing heavy objects. I'll likely keep it in a plastic box in the back for now with the rest of the off road and recovery gear. Maybe someday I'll upgrade to that tailgate storage. We have two little girls and our use is remote Montana USFS roads, generally high-clearance 4x4-only but not anything specifically technical like rock crawling or with much risk of rolling over.

if you see/ hold one in person, you realize it is far from a come along and worth every inch of space in your rig, even if you have a winch

I couldn't find anything comparable after a reasonable amount of searching and reading. A heavy duty 30 pound rotary winch with 35 feet of cable, now 0-maintenance synthetic cable, for around $250. Beats $500+ for a tirfor type winch and $1500+ for an M12000 which is mounted to the front bumper. We go solo up here, not on group trail rides, and might be 50 miles from the nearest town, a town with 300 people for example, and want something with 360 degree coverage and little chance of failure.

Something like this?

I've been weighing my options on electric vs. hand winch quite a bit lately. Every time I've been 'temporarily detained' while in normal passenger vehicles (meaning non heavy equipment or military rigs), I could have gotten out with an appropriately sized hand winch. I like the less overall weight and tighter tucked bumper up front, too. I'd go with the tirfor design if it weren't for the more affordable MPP mentioned by the OP.
