Over the past weekend I had time to work on him again. Installed the new battery, removed the air filter assembly, and checked for any obvious obstruction in the carb. Everything looked normal, so I started him up, and it fired straight off! I let it run for 2-3 minutes at 1/2 choke and everything seemed fine. As soon as I took the choke off the motor died.

I then proceeded to try everything in my powers to try and get it going again. Choke working - Check
Fuel from carb side of pump - Check
Accelerator pump - Check
Float/sight glass - Check

I sprayed carb cleaner to "blow out" any obstructions, let it sit a while and then tried to turn it over...nothing. It would turn over just not fire. This said the only thing I have not checked is that I am indeed getting fire. I will check that tonight. I don't know how it would run perfectly for 4 weeks and then suddenly stop. I'm far from a grade A mechanic, but I can usually sort issues out.

Before I go and rebuild the carb does anyone have any suggestions on what else to check on. Solenoid valve?

Any ideas or suggestions would help.

When you have the carb off, check to see if the intake manifold has a crack in it directly under where the carb sits. I chased my tail for 8 months on a similar issue that you are having. I checked and sprayed for vacuum leaks, but because it was under the carb, the idling was not affected by the spray. Finally after taking the freshly built Jim C carb off to check for rust flakes and clean, I noticed the crack! All the way through. After searching, it seems this is a common problem.

Just a quick look may save you some head ache.

Hi Aaron

That sure is a nice clean pig! Wish I bought it myself now!!!
How did you go getting it going?

Dave

Randy, Thanks for the heads up. I'll look at the manifold tomorrow.

Dave, Good to hear from you. I'm really happy with the purchase. Even though there are a few probs at the moment I think that in the long run they are small ones. I still haven't gotten the old boy running. It has been due to lack of time to work on it more than anything. NOTE: I have been seeing another brown 55 here in Canberra over the past few weeks. It looks to be in good shape. We should catch up soon. My new mobile number is 0411 836 125. I'll hopefully have the Moose running by the weekend.

UPDATE: The Moose is on the Loose! After a few hours of stuffing around the carb I moved on to the fire (or lack there of). Replace the plugs and checked for spark.....none. Went to AutoBarn and basically bought the entire ignition system and worked my way back. Luckily I only had one step to go.

It ended up being the ignition coil. The original had apparently thrown in the towel. Runs like a champ now.

The wife came for a visit from the States and brought all my tools, so I shouldn't have many issues I can't fix in the future. His next outing is a trip to Terrigal, NSW camping on the beach.

Crushers...I'm still debating the color. I want to keep it original but the brown is really pretty average. I plan on getting the body work done in the next few months, so I still have a bit of time up my sleeve:)

Good to hear its back on the road! look forward to coming having a look soon. will let you and your wife settle in, unless you have some spare time over the easter break????.. are you north or south canberra??
Have to try talking you into keeping the brown :D. Trollhole has a good pic of one in brown. looks really good, but then again its the only colour we got down here..
There is about 3 others cruising around canberra that I have seen over the last 12 months, all brown and white..

Dave..

Hey Dave! The wife is back in the states and the moment, so I've got plenty of time on my hands. I'm in north Canberra (Evatt) not 30-40 min from Yass. I'm heading out to Hall today to have a look at the ute round up. I'll try and catch up with you this weekend.

Hey Bill! Never really thought of the blue and white. I'll look for a pic. I'll give you a call when I'm back in the States!

Landshark

Here is my blue and white. My wife likes it becasue she thinks it looks like a beach cruiser.....at one point I was going to paint a shark on the front doors and put "shark patrol" on it....but their are no beaches here in KANSAS!!

That blue looks great! Do you know if it is a standard color?
