planning to try and make it if still OK with you guys.

I'll try to do some of Red Rock Canyon too since it's on the way. Probably afterwards. (Anybody interested?)

sounds like the popup may not be a great idea, then. Darn, such luxury it is to camp in that thing. Maybe I'll bring a utility trailer with bigger ground clearance to use the RTT or even just the truck then.

So, is there an official meeting point? directions or map? (I'm understanding there is a trail (not just a dirt road) to negotiate before one gets to the camping spots. That right?
the MUD 2m freq?

Cool!!

At this time I'm planning on leaving the valley (SF valley) about 9am on Friday. Kemasa and I are discussing the meeting point for all those coming from various points. We're thinking maybe meet in Ridgecrest and have a bite to eat, then head up the hill from there.

Eric, send me a PM with your cellphone, I'll reply with mine.

Brent is correct on the 2M freq.

Yes, there's a tiny bit of "trail" on the way into the meadow, but it's really not any challenge to speak of. the rest is pretty much a dirt road. On Saturday we'll do the jeep trail, it's not difficult as trails go, but there's a couple of sections where you may need to re-take a line or hit the locker.

Do you know how to get to the Black Rock Ranger station?

I guess we should get directions out to everyone, in case they miss the meet up in ridgecrest (or wherever). And we're still trying to decide on where in Ridgecrest to meet, but i'll get that decided very soon.

Red Rock sounds good, there's one trail that Mark A led us on a few years ago that I'd love to do again, but I'm not 100% sure I can find it. It was a good climb.

Welcome!!

Dana

After you stop to fuel up in Pearsonville:

Cross the highway to the frontage road on the west side
Turn right, go approx. 1 + mile (north)
Sign will indicate left to Kennedy Meadows, make left turn
Welcome to 9 Mile Road
After long climb and entering "civilization" again, make left at "Y"
Directly on right side is Kennedy Store that Fireflyr mentioned. Stop in, it's cool.
Get back on road and continue "west"
More up and down, approx. 30 minutes
Signs will tell you when you hit right turn for Blackrock Station
BR Station directly on right

MAKE SURE YOU HAVE A CURRENT FIRE LICENSE

Damn, I wish I was able to meet up with you guys.

It is a good reminder for people to get a fire permit. It is free and good for the calendar year, so it will be good for only a few months, but ...

I do have one, but that is only good if I am there, so it is best for others to also have one. You also need to have a shovel (per permit).

collective wisdom:

given up on the popup, but can I make it safely to the camping area with a utility trailer? about 12' long total, 6' wide. 25" tires. 15" ground clearance. rotating pintle. Probably over 1000 lbs loaded. RTT and rack on top.

what say you?

That'd probably work

Length might be an issue in some spots, though. I'm thinking the hard right-hander after you go through the gate and cross the river may be a tight one.

Can we pick up a fire permit at the Blackrock station? Assume we'll also need an Adventure Pass? My last annual one has expired, so I need to pick up a new one anyway.

Yes, you can get a Fire Permit at Blackrock

No Adventure Pass necessary

hmmm.... and way too heavy to manhandle single handedly... although I suppose a high lift and chain might do wonders....

darn, I would like to take it, but I sure would not want to not make it through and have to leave it somewhere...

(this tight spot, was this after or before the ranger station (where I assume I could leave it safely if need be)?)

(no need for much extra gas I imagine, if last filled up in Pearsonville? or do you plan to do a bunch of trail exploring?)

Once you leave Blackrock, you will be on pavement for approx 15 minutes.
Once you hit the trail head, you will see the area Fireflyr (or someone) mentioned where the motorcyclists camp. I left my truck there after towing our Cruiser up and had no problems. I wouldn't want to camp there, though.

The bitch is, if you get to a spot that the trailer is a problem, you're kida at the point of no return. You won't be backing out, turning around will be a bitch, etc.

Follow someone in for support, if you feel adventures. Personally, I'd just bring a tent and leave the trailer at home.

If you were in a 40 w/ a military trailer I'd say go for it, as I've seen it done. You might be pushing the envelope.

We've seen Hummers and crewcab Fords in the meadow, but they "payed the price".

As far as fuel, your "fancy" rig (:flipoff2:) should be just fine after you top off in Pearsonville. Any "wheelin" you do will be very light.

Monanche is all about the relaxation.

OK, gave up on the second trailer too... not worth the potential hassle...

will be just the lonely truck and I. All loaded up and rearing to go....

looking forward to a good time with good folks.

and planning on some quality time in Red Rock too....

wish I could go :crybaby:

Sooooooo......................

Pics, you bastadges

had a great time
good folks, good trip, nice area

would never have gone to this place were it not for MUD. Thanks Ken and Dana!

(FWIW, Sierra LWB pickup did keep up with the 80s, I was impressed!)

was indeed peaceful when I was there by myself. Slept outside. Freezing cold. Fortunately, that meant that the bears were inside... :)

and, since I asked: regarding trailer to the river campsites:
- typical popup: not a good idea
- utility trailer: yup, likely would work, if bouncing things a lot and dragging here and there
- specialized offroad trailer: no problem
