Where I turned north at Ocoee lake to Reliance......just before the turn there is a FS road that will take you there in a round about way.

Next time.......

Great camping area by a lake on top of Chilhowee Mountain. Herd of wild hogs came through the campsite one night, rooting around the tent.......scared the holy crap out of me!

Last weekend I took Berkley back to NC. Solo trip just the two of us.

I hit all the sections of the GA traverse I missed the last time.

One thing I noticed was how close I came to the old route I took documented in this trip report.

This would make a CRAZY awesome loop.

The crude line I drew will take you from Gatlinburg through the National Park to the beginning of the Blue Ridge Parkway.

GA Traverse starting at the AL\GA border.

Up to Ocoee, over to the old track I made that goes up via Tellico and Dragon’s Tail.

Parkway over to Brevard

Brevard to East side of the Traverse.

Traverse back to Dalton GA

Last time I did the GA Traverse I did it west to east. It was like a new trail going the opposite direction. Highly recommended.

I keep getting the opportunity to explore this area since my daughter keeps spending the summer in North Carolina. Back in May I took her 100 up there and spent some time exploring Pisgah north and east of Brevard. It was pretty nice but nothing to really write about.

This month I went back and grabbed the 100 and re-explored some of the Forest west of Asheville then down through Smokey Mtn National Forest then over to the Forest around Tellico and beyond.

I started off on Hurricane Creek. This was a fairly difficult trail. I don’t have ATRAC and the rear locker won’t engage so I had to pay attention the whole trail.

Photos along the way.

I exited this trail and made my way up toward Max Patch which was my first mistake of the trail. This place has become overly popular of late and I dodged Chevy Volts and Prius all the way up. I immediately bailed on that plan and peeled off and explored to the west and made a nice loop through the WMA. There was no one on the trials. Nothing hard but very remote and beautiful.

I looped back and crossed under I-40 and explored my way up to Buzzards Roost. It was raining and one of the trails was a downhill on a powerline and it was pretty sketchy. I was glad I was going down it.

This track put me out on Hwy 32 which is along the northeast border of Smokey Mountain National Park. Awesome asphalt.

Once I hit that asphalt I was pretty committed to
Pavement to get south however it was some of the best asphalt in the south through the National Park. It was late to evening so there were no crowds and epic views. I hunted for a place near Bryson City that a guy was letting me camp but it got dark and I never found it so I ended up in a hotel in town.

Day 1 done

I was exploring dead end roads and small tracks, taking my time and marking good campsites.

I made it to the Tellico River and again turned west so I could access the trails on the south side of the river

Tons of fantastic gravel roads and very few people once away from the River.

I hope to either live or spend a LOT more time in the area of this map one day (the latter being more likely)

There were lots of dead end roads that I explored and looked for hidden spots. That side of the forest is very nice. I’m sure I missed something but I felt like I hit every side road I saw. Once back at the Tellico River I had to make a pilgrimage to Green Cove

I exited out the Murphy side. Grabbed some food and gas and picked a very nice route of small 2 lane and gravel to pick up The Georgia Traverse just West of Helen Georgia.
I had a bunch of camps marked on the trail and I usually drive to dark which is about 9 pm
