Question for the experts....

I have four white stock wheels from my 1985 Toyota Mini Truck and I need a fifth wheel for the spare that was missing. I found one but it is from a 1987 Mini Truck. It appears to be the same.

Do the 1987 white steel wheels have any differences to the 1985 white steel wheels?

Assuming that the 87 is a US truck with IFS and it's a stock wheel, probably not. The stock IFS wheel has more backspacing and may have a smaller diameter center.

So now I am a bit confused. One guy says they are different and one says the same? Can anyone break the tie before I buy the 1987 wheels?

In 86 the trucks and 4Runner got larger drum brakes in the rear, I don't know if this changed the size of the rims or not..... but it may have. Just ask the seller to measure the rims for you.... Or just buy it and YOU can tell us if it's different..... :D
 
The rear is not a problem, I don't think it'll work in the front. IFS-era wheels have a deeper BS, it will likely rub on the front brake calipers. I had to swap wheel hubs on my solid front axle to the IFS wheel hubs in order to get my nice SR5 alloy wheels to fit. The other option is to get a spacer. Not really worth it for a spare tire.

If it's not far away, take a jack and lug wrench and try it before you buy it.

The other thing you could do is, in the event of a flat on the front, swap a rear wheel to the front, then put the spare on the rear. What a PITA... I know.
 
IFS wheels have more backspacng than Straight axle wheels so the wheelweights/rim will more than likely rub on the tie rod ends if you put an ifs wheel on a straight axle without wheel spacers of some sort.

Back Spaceing... Moving The Center Of The Rim Further Towards The Vehical To Give More Room For Brakes Right? Or Wider Stance.

So If IFS Has More Back Spaceing Then A Solid Axle. Wouldn't This Give More Room For A Brakes On A Solid Axle Since Thay Are Back Spaced? Since The IFS Rims Where Back Spaced For The Larger Brakes. Right?

Now If He Was Taking Solid Axle Stock Rims On IFS It Might Not Work From What I Understand From You Guys...


Hell, I Use Stock FJ40 Rims For My 91 IFS Isuzu... Jus Thought I'd Through That Out.

It is the distance from the BACK (inside when on vehicle) edge of the rim to the mounting surface. Some people confuse it with offset, but they are not the same.

IFS wheels have deeper backspaceing due to the wider stance of the IFS front suspension. The rear axle is wider too.

You can run older solid axle wheels on an IFS truck, no problem. I've done this. But you can't do the opposite, put IFS wheels on an older solid axle truck, both Cruiser and Mini-trucks. Tried it, doesn't work. The wheels will rub on either the brake calipers or the tie rod ends.

Now, before somebody says it, yes they did have the same SR5 alloy wheels on '91-92 FJ80s as they put on the '86-95 mini-trucks. BUT. They have a different offset, the wheels look the same from the outside but they are not exactly the same.
 
Solid axle wheels have 3.625" of backspacing.
IFS wheels have 4.5" of backspacing.

An IFS wheel will NOT work on a solid axle w/o a wheel spacer. It will hit the steering arms.

No, I don't. But I did see a set next to the ones on my '87 yesterday, my friend has a set on his 4Runner. The numbers cast into the wheels are different.

Did you READ any of what several people posted above?

Here, I'll do it again:

A DEEPER BS IFS WHEEL WILL NOT WORK ON A SOLID FRONT AXLE. IT WILL RUB ON EITHER THE TIE ROD END OR THE BRAKE CALIPER.

I tried it once. It DID NOT FIT.

Older solid axle wheels will fit on an IFS truck, but they may stick out a little. I've done this. It's not a problem.
