I went one further on the dual battery setup and installed relays to cut the alternator out of the circuit while winching.
Please elaborate as to why you would want this modification.

Thanks!

I just installed a mean green 140amp alternator in my fj62. I really like it. Lots of steady power. I dont have a dual battery setup so i cant help on that but im sure i will one day.

55amp is max amp for a 2f alt, thats what my 40's and all fj60's have.

why do you want to be able to cut the alt out of the loop?

Pimp and Poser and all, there is some danger of overloading the regulator or the rectifier. A healthy alternator can handle running at maximum output for quite a while. But with age the possibility of frying it increases somewhat. So I chose to remove the charge circuit while winching. It's mainly a safety feature that most people choose to forego. And in fact I used a simple electronic isolator for several years on my heep with no problems.

But when I was working with a partner building log homes, we used a Warn to lift logs into place with an overhead cable setup. We were using it pretty heavy at times. And I have this image in the back of my mind of an FJ40 parked in the woods by a lake, next to a small cabin, with a huge ridge pole suspended over the shell of a cabin. Oh what a dreamer!

Hey thanks John. That was a great way to start our vacation. Thanks for putting up with a bunch of hics gawking around the property. Some great iron out there! ;)

Butch - have you ever done the conversion with the GM alt? Does it bolt up pretty easily? And what about the pully?
You have to cut a notch out of the GM alt mount, and use some pipe or washers to keep it in place, and use a narrow GM width belt. I have done 3 and helped several in LSLC do them
Butch

I have been able to swap the pulley over so you could run the Land Crusier belt...but the other stuff Butch posted up is the same..

Good luck!

theo-

Understand your point. I guess that if I burn up my premier 160 amp alt from overloading it because of winch draw, it would have bunrt up from welding too..

Thanks!

everyone seems to love the dual batteries. I never even thought about it. Seems John liked it because he could flip the switch and self jump (sounds nasty) himself. Others talked about extra power. The extra power would have to be when the rig is off, right? Two batteries might give you extra current initially but you should design the system to require more then the alt can put out or it will end up being a problem.

I don't see the big driver to go to the dual battery system. Please enlighten me where I am missing something. Sure, If I was filthy rich I might do it, but I have to choose my mods carefully.

Thanks,

Ken

a small guage wire taps into the fuseblock(or wire) that is hot when the truck is running, all it does it triger the selnoid when the ignition is on, all this is doing is automaticly joining the batteries for charging/discharging, you can do the same thing with a marine battery switch($50) except you manualy(under hood) need to switch it over.

FWIW the combo of the Wrangler battery manager and selnoid is about $150. Add cable($20-50), teminals/lugs(20+), heat shrink(10), battery tray(s)(0-100), batteries(100-300), ect ect ect and it adds up fast.......the little stuff seems to REALLY add up fast. Add a bigger alt, $100-400

I kinda feel this way, if it has a winch it needs dual batteries. Right or wrong.......all my cruisers(except the 45, it has a HUGE yellow top) with winches have dual batts

LP- is the solenoid wired to the key or a separate switch?

John - help me out here. Both Cruisers I have had only had single batteries and both had winches. I used the winch on several ocassions and never had an issue. I did have the engine running when the winch was engaged though. Is it for running the winch with the engine off?

Pimp, any chance you could post up the part numbers? That looks to be a really slick setup, not much more expensive than a marine switch, really, but I couldn't find all the parts on the site individually. All the stuff I saw looked like it was priced including the battery ::)

prolly goes back(to the late 1980's) to the 1st time I got stuck in the middle of Bumfawk by myself burried up the doors in mud.........ran the battery down trying to winch out, had to trade my Helly Hanson raingear to the guy with the stolen(found that out latter) backhoe to drag my ass out. Heck we even ran 2 batts down(in the fj80) one night winching for hours to get out of a hole

So right or wrong I like dual batts.

I dont think I have them. All ya need is the 200 amp selnoid, then measure how far from where you plan to mount the selnoid to where you will mount the incab switch, add a bit of length to be safe, then call Wrangler and tell em what ya need.

cables I make myself, sure you can order them premade but you better be longer than shorter or you will not be able to use the cables.

FWIW the Painless kit works in the same way as the Wrangler kits I use.

painless.com has the switch/solenoid setup but you have to purchase through their dealers, mostly autozones check the find dealer page for your area
