So... I picked this guy up recently. Leaking badly but runs. Plans aren't to keep the stock engine so I'm not too worried about it but would like to maybe fix it up enough to sell the drivetrain at any rate.

Snagged a few more pictures tonight. It's at my buddies house waiting for his lift to free up.

1992 FJ80 3FE A440F

Came from Texas and spent a brief time in Incline. Some definite Texas hill billy engineering going on under the hood.

All things considered though I love it.

Vacuum lines all cut and capped? EGR and smog?

Has an aftermarket H/U with amp, I'd love to keep the H/U and dump the amp. Ghetto install anyway. Had two thick gauge cables running off as well but I pulled them out of the way. Lord only know what all this is going to. And what's up with this OEM connector going straight to batt +

An electrical nightmare.

So yeah, plenty to keep me busy if I can actually start working on it. Probably won't be going very fast though. :p

I love those rigs....

What are the plans for it?

60/14b, 3 link/leaves
12 valve 5.9
NV4500
205 and doubler

f/r bumpers (swing out)
sliders
skids
winch
snorkel
37s

That's roughly where I'm headed with it.

the tube you were wondering about is to cool the intake, fj80's run hot, and there is a fan on the other end of that tube to cool the intake after shutdown.

looks like a nice cruiser, throw a locker in the back and wheel it you may like it, a stock fj80 will out wheel a lot of lifted rigs, add 4 inches and 35's with lockers and they are unreal... and the stock axles are really beafy.. somewhere between a dana 44 and dana 60.. if you cut the fenders 37's fit with a 4" lift, do a search one guy did a real clean job of stretching the fenders for 37"s to fit..

having had 3 cummins trucks and a chevy with a cummins in it now, if you want a diesel in a fj80 do the isuzu swap, alot cleaner and quieter..

5.9's are nice but they make a lot of noise, 3 layers of dymat just to talk on the cellphone.. in mine and they will distroy drivelines, a stock 12 valve will make a pretzl out of that 14 bolt, mine was hard on dana 70's even with stock tires.. and on a lifted truck you will be putting in 1410 u joints alot... been there done that..

Dont take me the wrong way just trying to make you aware of what you are getting into, been driving 5.9's for over 15 years and love the motor but the torque it puts out and the way they shake when they shutdown is nasty.. and in a 4x4 they are hard on drivelines and rearends.. a fj80 with a cummins would be neat, but the rattle of a cummins in a fj80 would get old, or maybe I am getting old...

I appreciate the advice certainly. After finding the FSM and doing some more research I can tell this 3FE is one hell of an engine, and I'd rather have it than even the 1FZ :p. The 4bdt1 whatever Isuzu looks interesting but regardless I'm pretty set on the 5.9. I was planning on a dynamat type material and maybe more. I'm looking for a VE pump 5.9 as well to smooth some of that out.

I have a hard time believing even with the torque of the 5.9 I'll eat that 14B, it's much stronger than a 70 even. I don't doubt that it'll be hard on the drivelines and u-joints though. This won't be a daily driven rig either so that will be helpful.

good luck when you get to the point of swapping the cummins pm me and I will show you my crew cab and what I did in the swap. hopefully I can save you some time and energy.

the 14 bolt will live in what you are doing but they have limitations. My cummins trucks all tow heavy so even dana 80's don't last forever.

For what you are doing look at the max input torque and then do the math, with a doubler and 400ft/lb off idle with a 6bt and then the gear reduction just make sure you are not exceeding the max input torque and you should be fine..

Got her up on the lift just to see what's going on with this 3FE. Lost the oil galley plug in the head. Hmm...

I'm not sure if the P/O ran it out of oil until he shut it off or if he noticed and shut it off quickly or what happened. Aside from some nasty sounding valve noise, I think?, on start up it seems to run pretty smoothly. I think I may be able to make this thing driveable until I get myself re-located.

We'll see what happens after I get it fixed and put some fresh oil in her.

Figured since the P/O says this engine makes a "terrible rusty noise" when it warms up we would try the JB weld to get it going and see what's up. Didn't last long at all. Fixing her proper like now I guess. Lots of nasty cracked hoses as well.

Didn't see anything too alarming thus far so I've got my fingers crossed he didn't spin a bearing or something else awful. 226,xxx miles. Come on 3FE.

Don't plan on keeping this engine long but it'd be nice if it ran -- well.

Oh and I have about 115 to 123 psi across all cylinders. One was maybe 105 ish but I poured a little ATF into the cylinder and it jumped up quite even with the others. I'm happy with that!

Front wheel bearings need looked at, quite a bit of play, but the knuckle isn't moving so I don't think it's trunnions. Knuckle balls are rusty as hell. Probably need to add some fresh grease. I'm sure the whole thing could use a rebuild but I don't really want to put the money or time into it since I don't plan on keeping this axle. Or really driving this thing.

You could probably pull the plug on the top of the knuckle and pump a bunch of grease in, which should get you a few thousand more miles on the birf's.

Yeah I was planning on that, won't really be driving it so it shouldn't be a problem! :p

Well with the development of a rod knock I decided I'm going to try and sell engine/trans/t-case now.

226xxx miles, knock on 1 or more cylinders. Runs though! 120 psi compression across the board. Drove fine until I heard the rod knock so trans is good and I believe the t-case worked as well. Something I could test easy enough at any rate. Trans does seem to be leaking a little as I can see a few red droplets on the trans pan bolts. PS pump is headed south as well.

Any thoughts on what these are worth?

drop the pan and see what you have, rod bearings arn't that bad, may buy you some time, what was the oil pressure like even with the knock???

Per Ray...sounds like a rod bearing to me. Same sound when a friend's 2F went south and we later discovered upon tear-down it was a rod bearing.

Should have said rod bearings aren't that bad to do, when he pulled the plug and it went away says rod bearing or piston pin.
