well two weeks later still waiting for shocks 4" extended amada nitro shocks still not shipped from thailand . Anyway a quick blast 175k up the highway AND back sat/sunday sits on 120k happily runing about .7 bar at 3000rpm on 33"s and 3400 at 140k but it needs coolant as they only stuck water in the radiator :( . after 80k just put the boot in and the turbo sings as the thing just pulls hard so cool to pass with. i will take video soonn

Sounds good, I took mine for a run upto 130km/h and it did it easily. Is your motor harsh/vibrate much? I find mine is quite harsh at 3000rpm but is noticable smoother at 3600rpm.

My girlfriend should be picking up my new turbo from the post office today, hopefully some pics tomorrow.

Its arrived, will be on this weekend, I hope to crack 22psi under 2000rpm

Impressive. Are you running an intercooler?

Its on and working well!! I had problems with the provided wastegate actuator, which I ditched after the internals broke, now using a modified standard toyota actuator. First impressions, bolt it on, no mods to anything or to my boost tee it hit 30psi on the run up the hill near home. Old turbo must have been at its limit pushing 21.5psi. After some mucking around for a day or so with wastegate actuators and the boost tee I now have boost set to 23psi.

Response is MUCH better, old turbo used to give me 21.5psi at ~3200rpm the new one from Graeme makes 23psi at ~2300rpm and holds it all the way. EGT's are lower under acceleration, 0-100km/h I used to reach ~650c pre turbo, now I am stuggling to get past 600c. I am not sure but I think I might have reached the maximum fuel output from the pump, I have wound the maximum fuel screw in a further ~1.5 turns and noticed little difference to EGT's if any at all.

I am looking at having the car dyno tuned where the turner can explore other adjustments on the pump etc.

Driving during the day I do not notice any smoke behind the car, at night I can see smoke in the headlights of cars following me.

Have you posted up the numbers on your fuel pump? The tag includes a code for the size of the plungers.

I think from rough calcs posted earlier that you've got maybe 113cc of fuel per thousand shots. This is based of airflow and the safe EGT's you've got at the moment. At a guess you'd have around 8mm plungers. Isuzu do A pumps with 10mm plungers capable of around 200cc of fuel per thousand shots.

Yep, aluminium tag on the side with a long code on it. I just edited my post above too.

The A90 means you have 9.0mm elements. They should be good for around 140cc/1000 of diesel.
Another Isuzu owner with 9.5mm elements has bench tested his pump at 180cc/1000 shots max.
I have not enough air to get anywhere near max fuel. I still haven't fitted an intercooler.

Randy with his 4BD1TT has a modified injector pump capable of 850cc/1000 shots. He's considering selling upgrade parts for A type pumps like ours.

If you can get the fuel inrto it with that turbo (and measure your post IC temps to keep them below 70 °C at all times) then you should expect 130-140rwkw with your new turbo at about 23-25psi.

At full load and 1800rpm does it smoke?

Dougal, when you say "like ours" does this mean that Hulstys pump is an "A" type. I wonder if this fellow can also modify the pump for a 12HT.... I want one build to handle enough fuel for a lowly 180cc Max (6cyl).

They have 9mm plungers std and only use up max 14mm of 21mm rack travel, so in reality I just need someone to carefully build and set the pump and modify to use the whole rack......

Cheers

Yep, they all appear to be the same A type architecture. Some made by Zexel (like the Nissan & Isuzu ones), some by Bosch (Cummins 4BT) and some by Denso (toyota).

I will try and load it up with the brakes at 1800 rpm and see what it does EGT wise, I got a surprise the other day when I accidently started spinning the tyres on dry tar.

I have been running around at 20psi, after going for long drives etc and stopping, the intercooler barrel always feels cool to the touch. My old turbo must have been very inefficient and pumped hot air as I could get the barrel warm.

During the day I do not notice any thick smoke, more a light haze out the back of the car. At night with a cars headlights behind me its like a steam train. With the new turbo I stuggle big time to get EGTs up to 600c pre turbo. Today I got upto 580c lugging the engine down to 1400rpm ~10psi ish.

I also checked where my engine speed governer is, as I have not seen the engine spin past 3600rpm, it is set at ~4100rpm free reving, makes ~15psi too free reving at those rpms.

I very roughly estimate by feel I am around the 80-90rwkw mark on 35''s as the cars feels very similar to drive as my Dads VDJ79 when it was stock. VDJ79 is now much faster though

Thanks for that Dougal, do you know anywhere books/forums etc where I can read about what people have done to A type pumps, that 850cc sounds rediculous! It must need alot of air to burn it all!

The most information has come from two members on 4btswaps. Carcrafter22 (Randy) who has the 850cc pump on his 4BD1T. I think it's all in pieces working on several different projects but he was running two holsets as a compound set, pushing towards triple figures of boost. The stock Isuzu headgasket held until 60psi.
He wasn't using all of that 850, but the pump can deliver that.

His was originally a 9.5mm pump Isuzu (Zexel) A type pump which put out around 140cc/1000 in stock condition. We have since found there's a rack limiter which you can remove to get to 180cc. Modification to the 850cc capacity meant fitting a completely different governor and shaving the block to physically fit it.

The other is Bush65 (John) who has a 9.5mm Isuzu (Zexel) A type pump. His has been bench tested and set to be capable of around 180cc/1000 shots. Essentially stock but internally modified. He looked at larger elements but something made it not feasible for his setup. John has moved somewhere in Aussie with no internet so hasn't been online to tell us how it's working out.

My pump also has 9.5mm plungers, I need to do a lot of ancillary work to be able to use all of that. My rangerover is quite tight for space to fit the necessary intercooler, bigger exhaust and aircleaner piping.
