Well took the Sequoia in for an oil change, etc. yesterday before traveling for the holidays. My mechanic gave me a run down on the things I will be addressing in the 1st quarter of 2014 including the timing belt as my mileage is right 180K. I mentioned to him that I thought I had him do it the last time at about 105K. He checked his system and it didn't show that he did that job for me. GULP. No worries - I know I had it done, so I must have had Molle do it. A quick call over to Molle and them informing me nope they didn't do it. GULP. In my mind I knew I had it done but no records indicated that I had it done. I didn't have any receipts (I am spotty at best when saving receipts).

CRAP! Is it possible I just thought about doing it and in fact did not.? Did I some how make it to 180K on original belt? My heart rate stayed at an elevated rate all yesterday afternoon as I tried to solve the mystery. In the end, I decided I needed it done anyway, my mechanic couldn't get me on short notice so thankfully Molle could get me in today, so here I sit in their lounge waiting to get the work done. I have asked for them to save the belt and show it to me. In my mind as I drove to Molle it was only held together by one small thread ;)

Again, is it even possible the belt lasted 180K?

Jenn's in the highlander made it past that # by quite a bit..

I had My 01 Tundra done at 170k and the belt looked brand new. I know it wasn't done before I bought because I've had it since it had 20k on it.

Both possible and probable in a city environment. The fear of course is if it goes, and it's an interference engine. Usually they place a sticker with mileage, date, etc on the timing belt cover when they complete the job... usually.

Seems like there are competitions on another site as to who can go the furthest on their timing belts. Many were well over that number, but it's not as scary on non-interference engines, just a pain depending on where it gives up.

Safe travels, hopefully you get out prior to the weather, being that the real concern is the other drivers ;)

So.. Either your late.. or your early for the 200k.. regardless.. now you goto 275K and repeat.. Your just being proactive on your maint.. ! Think of it that way.. Tell the wife.. Honey, we don't need to worry about this for another 75-100 thousand miles.

Yep that's how I see it - early maintenance and piece of mind. Oh and the mechanic showed me the belt and it looked brand new.

My mechanic said he always puts a sticker on the cover but the guys at Molle said they typically don't so i asked them to put it on this time so that I can avoid this situation in the future.

Happy Holidays everyone!

It's a Toyota, I wouldn't worry to much about the engine staying together.

Do you keep a logbook of all the maintenance performed, well at least the major stuff? This is a prime reason to have some method of quick reference to the maintenance history rather than a file folder of receipts 2”-3" or more thick. A simple spreadsheet or a notebook is all that's needed.

If you have the time this is also a good reason to do as much of your own maintenance as practical. If/when one feels in over their head that's what friends and club members are for.

I always take out the owners manual and mark the service done and interval, and it stays in the glovebox, so the answer is not far away.

FYI, I did the timing belt and all stuff last year on equivalent motor. Was really easy. Great Toyota part kits available on ebay, so don't be afraid to do it yourself.

Only trick is the crankshaft bolt that I bought a harbor freight "earthquake" impact wrench for and it buzzed it right off. -- $55 for new tool

Link to the ebay kit or the earthquake?

You can pm me. I sell the complete timing belt kit. I can get you a quote on Monday. It will be all asin/toyota parts.

Never mind on the kit. Wife found her dream Toyota. So we traded the tank in for a 06 burgundy 4runner came from Arkansas it's a v6 limited 65k on it. She is happy. I'm happy.
