Major Charging Issue Need Help

I have a 99 as well, and have been thinking of this problem, what came to mind, (after my reminiscing of my Mother's battery advice), is that this would be when I would replace the voltage regulator on my old Fords back in the 70s. A search told me that this circuitry is now
built into the alternators - but available as a separate part (here from camelback toyota):
ALTERNATOR / ALTERNATOR / ALTERNATOR / VOLTAGE REGULATOR
Part Number: 2770075020

voltage regulator Land Cruiser

MSRP Core ? Online Price
$230.92 $0.00 $169.37

So, quite honestly, I don't know if this is a help or not - I'm just following my own train of thought. It does not explain the repeated problem with various alternators. But if I were in your spot I'd consider replacing it - as it's function is to control the voltage.

I'm sorry if I am just pointing you down another dark alley. (I understand why mechanics typically hate electrical problems - they take more time than people are typically willing to pay for.)

So we had a rain cell move in today. And brought the temperatures way down. And the alternator liked the cooler temps better because it charged a bit higher then normal. But not a lot 13.8ish

New alternator came in today so my truck is at the dealer getting the new alternator put on. They did give me a copy of the 1999 Land Cruiser wiring diagram that I'm going to scan in as much as I can and post that for all of the owners of 98 through 2002 I think.

Okay, so I just got a call from the dealer who tells me the charging system is fixed. They want me to drive it for a few weeks and make sure this is really working. They have disconnected everything that isn't OEM Toyota except the stereo and the dash and backup cameras, so no remote start and no ScanGauge. It was worked on for two more days, I have another NEW OEM Toyota 80amp alternator. So I guess I will work on this from there. Have to find what the remote start and the OBD port have in common and see what I can do to fix that problem.

Toyota will not work on the electrical system of my truck again. My dealer called Toyota and the engineers at Toyota told them to leave the stereo and everything disconnected but they did reconnect that with no problems. Charging at 14+V... so far.

Good deal. I hope this fixes it. But would like to see what they disconnected to make work.

Also what remote start system do you have?

I have a viper, not sure of the model number can get that tonight I'm going to get it in a few minutes. They left the keys in the truck and they didn't charge me anything for all the work they did. I just was expecting them to change the alternator then charge me for the troubleshooting but so far they have told me the price is $0... so far.

Damn that’s good. I’m truly curious now about this. Hmmmm

I’m fairly sure this is not suppose to happen. But it like it’s broken on the inside. Is that normal? Should it be replaced?

In my opinion that should be replaced right now. It looks like the post itself is broken down into the battery and I have never seen that before.

Replace that battery it is not working 100% if the terminal is that loose. If it screws in place then tighten it up.

So far so good it hasn't shut off and the battery light (which I might add has NEVER come on, and was checked for proper function) has still not come on.

I haven't had a chance to get the wiring diagram scanned but will work on that a little today. The pages are really thin and can see through them easily so I hope they come out okay.

@KillerBox thank you for those but I have that and there are several big differences between a 1999 and an 2004 in the charging system. But since I have the book I'm going to scan it and see what I can do for those of us who have 1998 to 2002.

UPDATE!!- I have 99% fixed my issue. I did this last Tuesday (8-7-18) I waited this long to make sure it was fixed. So I bit the bullet and did the sequoia alternator upgrade 130amp (side note you do NOT have to cut off the third bracket). It was super easy. Just need the new alternator and the plug (90980-11964) I also bought new splices (82998-12440) x3. Also the diagram is for a 2000 lx470. And the last picture is the same order but the wire colors are wrong for a 2000 lx470. Just make sure you pay attention to your color wiring.

So, I might have mine fixed also. I will not know for sure until next Wednesday but needless to say if I disconnect my stereo my problem acts like it goes away. The new alternator is putting out 14.7V and battery holding steady. The big ball of poo the "professional stereo installer" left me looks like they pulled a 10yo off the street to do the job. I'm redoing the installation mostly myself but not the remote start just waiting in parts. Then I'm asking for my money back from the company that did the install.

So glad to hear the 130amp is working... is that what you told your wife in order to get the 130amp alternator? I just do what I want once I get permission.
