Anybody happen to have FSM instructions for spiral cable replacement? I believe my clock spring is on it's way out, yesterday horn stopped working so I checked fuse & relay but all was well- held down horn pad and turned wheel back and forth and sure enough, horn sounded. Adjusted steering column and horn sounded. I also get the telltale plastic scraping noise when wheel is turned, i guess it's time to get this taken care of!

Not the FSM but most of the work can be seen in this PDF: How To: Replace your own Upper Steering Column Shaft

Be sure to disconnect the battery.

Removal of the lower cluster trim (with the dimmer knob), steering wheel, and column shroud (clamshell) is all that’s needed, disregard the other disassembly steps.

Thanks so much- I kept searching and was able to locate the main shaft snap ring recall writeup so with both of these, I should be able to tackle this one. Appreciate the help!

I replaced my clock spring. Went to dealer and got the part. The horn was not working and I kept hearing a groaning noise. Procedure was not bad. When I put it in last week everything worked great. Horn skip buttons for CD player but he VSC codes were on. Scanner said steering angle sensor. Now a week later horn won’t work and the fast forward is broken again. The groan was the rubber boot on the floor board. I took everything apart to check connections all was fine and connected. Any idea what the heck is going on ? No horn no stereo control except volume. Everything else works. Horn works when you hit panic button on the fob

Noticed whats sounds like the clock spring started making some noise when I'm turning the steering wheel. Am I getting an little advance notice that its about to go?
Hey @abuck99 , any updates on this? Did your clock spring eventually fail? I also have the exact same sound coming from inside my steering wheel. It sounds like wires rubbing against plastic when turning the wheel. It was like that when I bought the truck and I've been living with it for about 10k miles. If it's a critical repair, I don't mind getting a new clock spring. Partsouq sells it for only $132 +shipping.

7+ yrs later still ok on the OG clock spring- (knock wood). I don’t remember what I might have tried to inspect or mitigate- but I don’t notice it. I am 7 yrs more hard of hearing now so maybe that’s the solution 🤣

That's great to hear @abuck99 !! Well then, I'll just hold off on replacing it until I get an airbag light or the SWC's stop working. Maybe I'll spray some silicone lube in there to quiet down the cable spooling noise.
