There's a pinch sensor in parts of the hatch seal. Is it possible they were removed and tweaked?
Hmm could very well be. It will remotely close if I hold the button a second time after it beeps at me. I’ll look for a diagram to see if that’s plausible. Thanks!

Same thing here.

edit: Can someone confirm that the rear hatch is supposed to open on it's own after hitting the switch on the hatch. I just looked at the owner's manual and it doesn't explicitly say that it will open on it's own.
great thread, but I am trying to solve this same problem and the solution is not clear for this problem:
key fob opens and closes rear hatch
inside button opens and closes rear hatch
inside close button on rear hatch closes the rear hatch
outside open button only releases the latch and does not open the rear hatch. The motor does not even engage with that button, but I can lift the hatch manually, no problem.

how do you fix that one issue related to the outside button releasing the latch but not engaging the motor?

Thank you!

It seems like that button on the back hatch should engage the motor for automatic lifting but it does not. You need to lift it manually when opening from the back unless you use the button on your key fob.

Thanks for the info. Glad I don't have to fix anything, but surprised the button does not activate the motor. I appreciate the clarification.

What year LX do you own?

It seems they changed the outside release button logic on later LXs. My earlier 2009 works as you describe. Auto release, little manual pull, and rest of opening is by way of gas strut.

As I understand it, the 2016+ will power open.

Personally, I prefer how ours works as it's quick and easy. With power option via key FOB.

My 2014 LX power opens/closes all the way. No manual pulling required. Although I did notice that lately it's not opening all the way (like it used to) and I need to push it up the last few inches. I suspect the struts may be due for replacement.

So looks like they changed it earlier? Wonder what year that was.

My 13 MY doesn't open automatically with the outside button.

It'd be nice to see a pic from one of the auto hatches at the strut to see if it's any different

Forgot to add. Replace those struts earlier that later. And I'd highly encourage you to use OEM.

My hatch actuator ultimately failed and had to be replaced because I believe my aftermarket struts sucked and wore the actuator out in two ways 1) tuned poorly and had too much lift pressure 2) failed early. Both strained the motor unnecessarily. The factory struts just work so much more beautifully with nice controlled and damped action. Slows nicely at the ends of travel. And last waaaaaay longer.

Thanks - I hadn't considered that the struts might put more stress on the actuator and other components. I found your post with the part numbers and just placed the order for both struts at the local Toyota dealer. Parts back ordered until Feb 6th, so figure I'll get them mid-February. Canadian pricing is $99/each.

I have a 2011

I have 14 but it does not open atomically when I press the rear hatch button.
It open/close automatically with button inside and via keyfob.

Oh, I may have missed a detail of the earlier discussion. My hatch will power open using the button near the steering wheel or the remote. The button on the outside of the hatch itself does need a little bit of pulling before struts take over.

Same here... thanks for the clarification.

2015 LX570 very similar power tailgate problem. It worked as recent as a week ago, and now inoperable. It used to close when pressing the button on the tailgate, and it would open and close with the dash button to the left of the steering wheel. What troubleshooting should I work through? Should I get Techstream? What are the plugs circled in red for?

I have already done the steps to reset the ECU by disconnecting the negative battery cable etc…

Current symptoms and behavior with the power button on showing red:

  1. Engine on, pressing and holdingdash open button, I hear the lock mechanism making noise and the motor trying to work. Ultimately this does not open the back door. Next I press it again and now all I get is a long beep.
  2. Key in pocket/ engine off: pressing rubber latch button to open tailgate I can hear the lock working, but nothing else, when I manually open the tailgate and it gets about half open it makes a long beep noise
  3. With back door open (struts seem week helping it up, but it does hold it up) and I press the power button on the trunk, it makes a long beep
  4. When I close the trunk manually I can hear the door lock motor working to pull the tailgate closed.
  5. With tailgate closed, and holding the open button on FOB, the rear taillights flash once, short beep, followed by long beep.

I just started having the same issue today. Was working fine yesterday. I'm guessing its the motor. My struts are OEM and just under 3 years old so I don't think that's the issue. I might try tearing apart the motor: Replaced tailgate motor 2010 LX570 - https://forum.ih8mud.com/threads/replaced-tailgate-motor-2010-lx570.1254628/#post-13889466
