Hi Guys,

My 2000 LX470 parking brakes never worked since I brought it and it seems like I found one reason why. I think I'm missing a part that connects the cable to the drum connection. From what I can find from a LC100 diagram it should be these parts below but not sure if the LX 470 is different from LC100. The LX470 specific diagram I can find from Lexus is not clear like the LC100 one.

Hello LexusX470,
Check out the parts diagrams on Amayama.
Very easy to navigate.

The parking brake mechanism for the 100 Series Land Cruiser and LX470 should be the same.
I may be telling you something that's already obvious, but are you missing parts from just one side or both sides?
Both the driver and passenger sides have the parking brake mechanism.

Per your signature, if you are in New Jersey, I'm guessing the missing pieces were very rusty / seized and the previous owner (or dealer...) removed them because the parking brake was not releasing.

Before ordering parts, I'd remove each rear wheel, caliper, and rotor, then see if all of the parking brake pieces are there.
They may also be rusty and / or the shoes (2 per side) may be worn / damaged from the parking brake not releasing...

When I 1st purchased my 2003 LX, as part of the baselining process, I replaced a vast majority of the parking brake parts around the rear axle.
I'm in Pittsburgh, PA and salt had damaged some of the parts.

I'll tell you how important it is to have a working emergency brake.
3 weeks ago, in my 2007 Lexus GX with only 105k miles, a kid on a scooter decided to only look 1 way and scoot out in front of my GX.
I was going about 35 miles per hour.
I slammed on the brakes, barely missed the kid, then continued on my way.
3 blocks later, when approaching a stop light going about 25 miles per hour, I went to hit the brakes for the 1st time after the incident, and the pedal went to the floor.
I used my emergency brake to stop, before rolling through the red light.
Without my emergency brake, I most likely would've been broadsided.

Good luck buying the parts and getting everything adjusted.
Download the FSM for install / adjustment procedures.

Enjoy.
Tom

Hi Tom!

Thanks for all your help. Amayama is super helpful and will definitely be bookmarked for the future.

The passenger side is connected and only the driver side is disconnect. You are right that the first owner had issues with the parking brake seizing and they cut it. The second owner reconnected it but I’m guessing it broke again so I will definitely have to investigate inside the drum brake.

I looks like you have the 9024008059 pin (outboard) and it's clip. I think all you are missing is the inboard pin (9024008061) and it's clip, along with the clevis (connector).

EDIT: actually, is that the inboard pin shown in the pic?? You may have all the parts already, its just unhooked...

You're welcome LexusX470,
If it were me, I'd fully disassemble (one side at a time...) all of the emergency brake parts that go inside the rotor drum.
Clean them with brake cleaner, inspect the shoes and other parts for damage, then reassemble per the FSM.
The FSM shows where to lubricate, and I believe I used Sil-Glyde or equivalent at all of the lubrication spots.
Make sure you don't get any lubricant on the brake shoes...

To reassemble, you'll need this tool or equivalent.
It's very difficult without the tool...

It's been about 6 months since I did rear brakes / e-brakes, so I may have used other non-Toyota drum brake tools as well.
But the one above is a must.

Good luck.

It's common in the rust belt for emergency brake systems, like the ones we have, to get stuck in the On position due to rust / corrosion.
Because yours has not been hooked up for who knows how long, I would not just hook it up and see what happens.
At a bare minimum, I would remove the brake rotor / drum, look inside and make sure all the parts / pieces are there, look like they are installed correctly, and can move freely (especially the adjustment wheel).
Even if you don't fully disassemble, I'd go through the proper adjustment process per the FSM.
This should take you less than 1 hour per side.
Brakes are not something that should be taken lightly.

Good luck.

It's common regardless of rust due to the dissimilar metals reaction that occurs between the bell crank and pin. No harm in connecting that pin and seeing if it moves freely and engages the brake. Again, assuming it was done by the PO for some reason, you should see what that reason is/was.

Agree to Disagree.
Without seeing what's inside the rotor / drum, there's no way to determine what condition the parts are in.
This is a very important safety item and should be properly inspected / adjusted.
The thread about Total Brake Failure in the 100 Series should be a good indicator of how important it is to have an inspected, adjusted, and properly working parking / emergency brake.

Looking down and I think you are right. I tried tugging on the cable and there’s no play and there’s no play on the connector. I assume I need to introduce some slack to the parking brake cable before I can reconnect it. I see some slack on the passenger side but I believe that is a whole another unit.

I didn’t up date my browser and was reading an older version without all your guys input. Before I do anything I’ll go ahead and order shoe brakes and hardware and then tackle this on a weekend where it’s okay if it sits for a few days if there’s anything that’s wrong with it. Thanks for all your help guys!
