Hello everyone,

I have a metallic rattle I’m trying to chase down. It only happens when in gear and when under load at low rpm. In my case driving through thick sand. It does not happen when revving in neutral. When putting it in low gear the noise went away but shortly came back. Once getting back on pavement, the noise hangs around for a minute or two and then completely goes away. It only comes back when I go back to driving through the sand.

So far I haven’t found anything loose on the exhaust system. Also since the noise doesn’t happen unless in gear, it makes me believe it is not exhaust related. Maybe timing/tranny/driveshaft?

I found some other mentions that it could be a timing issue with engine pinging. Would driving under load change the air/fuel for that to happen?

Any advice/help is appreciated.

1996 fzj80 300k miles.

Cheers.
