Marlin for President!!!!

Runnin' a single 4.7 w/4.10 diffs, 33's and 22r... wheels like a champ.

Maintaining expressway speeds is a whole different story! :D

What do you guys think, would it be worth me getting the Marlin 4.7 gears? Stock 2L diesel, 33x10.5x15s, stock 4.88s. I don't do a great deal of rock crawling though.

One of the very few things I have to complain about is to low. I turn 3.5k on the tac in 3rd gear and might register 5mph. If that. I will def. get a doubler and have my 2.28 for when i need the umph but dont need the gears. As Ive said before, hands down the best upgrade other than my lockers.

Fom the horses mouth.............I just wasnt bulshiting............size of tires isnt the real issue ....its tourqe not tires...arrrg

Most will not as they said...........but the way I run my s***..its just might happen and its something to think about when dealing with 21,23 or hell there is a reason why they are building 30 spline now:meh:

"Why mix 21 and 23 spline in the same dual case on 4cyl trucks?
turtle-logo.gif
All 4cyl Toyota trucks have the 21 spline output, except for the Turbo 5sp trucks. Many people run dual transfer case setups with 21 spline inputs in both units of a dual transfer case without problems. An even stronger setup is to put a 23 spline gear set in the rear of a dual transfer case. As the motor power comes out of the transmission, the torque is more than doubled when it goes through the first reduction unit of a dual transfer case. This means that torque going to the rear input of a dual transfer case is about double that of the front. If you purchase your gears and dual adapter at the same time, get the 23 spline dual adapter and 23 spline gear set. Using 23 spline components in the rear of a dual case setup is stronger yet costs the same as 21 spline components. If you use a 23 spline gear set in the rear, you must have a dual adapter with a 23 spline coupler. If you purchased a 21 spline dual adapter, you can replace the coupler in order to use it with 23 spline gears."

So what now?

Had to read this about 5 times to figure out what you were saying, still not 100% sure of your point...

No tires do matter........... torque.......... will never break anything without................wait for it............. resistance

I get it you are super duper hard on your junk

:grinpimp:

Where are you getting 30 spline from that? We do have 30 spline axles, but not 30 spline input gears for the tcase.

I have dual ultimates with all Trail Gear parts and both have 21 spline inputs. I also have a 23 spline 4.7 input gear if I decide to bump up for strength. I have had no problems with TG parts and I beat the crap out of my truck and now run 37" PB Rockers, before I ran 35" GY MT/Rs I also run stock 4.10 gearing in the diffs.

so despite the poll im going trail gear. cheaper and sold more places. talk to a few shops and they say there are no come backs. so there i go

So despite all of our advice and experience you chose T.G., cool, good luck with that.

I typically ask everyone what they think I should do- then do the exact opposite. Seems to work for me.:meh:

Meh, let us know if they fail. Odds are they proly wont. The toy mini-case is so strong in stock form that even cheap chinese trail-gear metal will probably last.

First off, I doubt a shop that sells TG stuff is going to tell you weather or not they have "comebacks" they want to sell stuff, and if they are selling TG then they aren't going to cringe at selling something they know isn't the best. Secondly read this, clearly TG shops are not past lying to their customers...

"While out wheeling just this past weekend, a gentleman approached Marlin and I and said that his Marlin Crawler Dual Ultimate was making pretty bad noise on the highway.

So we did the basic run down explaining how with an increased number of moving parts there will be an increase in gear noise, but that it should not be louder than your tires......then we began troubleshooting... Do you have a CV joint on the rear driveline? How good is your t/case mount? Is the shifter base rubbing against the cab? etc, and this guy, who was really cool, said that everything is fine and that it just started making this noise a couple weeks ago and the unit had just been installed not too long ago.

Well, long story short, Marlin crawls under his truck to take a quick look, and it turns out that he has a Trail-Gear, Inc. dual case adapter and presumably Trail-Gear, Inc. low range gears as well because the gentleman had these parts ordered and installed at the same time by a non-Marlin Crawler business.

Marlin said, "Well Sir, to be honest, this is not even my problem. You have a Trail-Gear dual case in here, it says Trail-Gear right on it"
And the gentleman replied and said, "Oh no, this is a Marlin Crawler Ultimate setup, it said so right on the receipt." "

well if TG is chinese then i will go marlin. USA only. but the Guy at advace adaptors said to go with marlin. so a shop telling you to go with something just becasue they sell it is not always the case. there are many reasons my part can be more than the others. I refuse to go with the logic it cost more so it most be better. i beliave people that say marlin is a good company and good parts. but when i go duals marlin has my business.

s***, after hearing all the stories about Marlin and his customer service EVEN ON THE TRAILS! Im surpriced he didnt spend the rest of the day tearing it down for him anyway, and fixing it....

Thats why I buy Marlin.

Everyone has a budget, so it goes. Me, I'll wait a little and spend the extra to have the best, but you sometimes gotta suck it up, it's just I am not one to do so.

FWIW, regarding Marlin's service skills on the trail, and his legacy, not just with TLCA, he has actually done that sort of thing a couple times on Rubicon to help people out, not to mention last year giving Zsasbo his spare gearset at Hammers when some factory Taco gears blew. Marlin even went as far as to use cream cheese to do the setup b/c there was no gear paint available. It drove over 700 miles home, etc, was torn down to swap in Zsasbo's new set, and showed no signs of wear or damage.

*Just for 2ndGenToyotaOwner, pics to prove it ;) : John's Broken Ring & Pinion from Clawhammer

Or how about his giving me so much input on my brake situation that he wasn't even getting paid for, he just wanted to be sure I understood it all fully and appreciated my interest and experience enough to treat me with respect and professionalism while teaching me at the same time.

Now that is service and talent in my eyes.

Like I said, Marlins times-elebenty1billion!!!

In 1998 I bought a dual case adapter from Marlin. When he learned that I was in Chico (then) he told me that he was coming up for the Pair-o-dice 4WD Sno-Run and that he could bring it to me to save on shipping. I wasn't in any hurry and saving money to a college student is a high priority thing. So the Sno-Run days comes around and I headed up the hill. Had a great time talking to all of the folks, but Marlin was a no-show. When I got home (it was a weekend - don't recall if Sat or Sun) there was a msg from Marlin saying that something had come up and he couldn't make it. Later the next week my dual case adapter gets dropped off by the brown santa. No shipping charges on the bill. I called down there about that and Marlin told me that he'd not been able to do what he promised so the shipping was on him.

Now contrast that with Gieger taking over the Mod status of the old ORC Mini truck list. That is a job that I wouldn't want, but I feel that he did an exceptionally poor job of it. He managed to alienate a lot of folks, me included. I dropped from that list because of this. Which was too bad because there were some good guys on that list then. Both of the Ellinger boys and DRM just to name a couple.

Guess who I do and don't buy parts from?

Someday I might actually get that dual case installed. I'm closing in on finishing the remote control shifter thanks to Overland Hardware.......
