Are these special keys though? (microchip etc) I got a key cut at granville toyota from the code on the right side lock cylinder for $5. I was so surprised at the price I had 3 made. My truck's an HJ60...

The JDM 80 series use a Lexus style non transponder key, the blanks themselves run $12-15:

LEXUS key

We sell this key for the LX450 (1996-1997), part# 90999-00220-rk for $77.70 plus tax & freight. With proof of ownership & pre-payment of course. The LX450 used a seperate electronic key fob for remote functions. In 1998 with the new LX470 the remote was part of the master key. The master & valet key would need programed to the vehical engine computer to start the vehical. This could only be done with an exsiting master key. This master key sells for $212.55 plus tax & freight, and 1/2 hour programing charge ($50.00). The valet is $88.20 plus tax & freight & 1/2 hour programing.

I know that the machine that was used to cut mine "reads" the key

Are you saying the key is cut according to its shape like a regular key (rather than numbers on a lock)?

Hiya all,

Just to follow up on the story for the record:

Since I could not find any code stamped on the steering column. I pulled the passenger (left) side door lock, and although there were a few numbers on it, none looked like a key code. I then pulled the Driver's (right) side door lock, and found a key code. So I think both JDM, and North American spec'd units have the key code on the Right hand door lock. Don't let "passenger side" throw you off on the right hand drive trucks. You will find it on the right side.

I then went to my local Lexus dealer (North Shore Lexus - North Vancouver) with door locks in hand hoping for the best. They were actually very helpful there, and fussed around for a while, and then said that they could possibly cut a key, but it would have to be done in Toronto, and there would be no guarantees. The cost would be 45.00 for a blank key, and 50.00 for the cut, so 95.00 total plus taxes, with no guarantee or refund if it did not work.

They gave me the name of a locksmith in Burnaby that they said may also do the job, so I headed over there and they were able to cut me one from the code for 40.00 plus taxes.

It worked fine, on both the door locks and ignition, so problem solved.

Thanks to all for the input!

Paul

Great info!!

The machine cuts the key to the key height code but it can read the code off of the key that is being used to make the copy rather than having the code punched into the machine. Even if the key is worn it will decide what code is the closest match to the key and cut to that.

That's smart! And an excellent example illustrating the error correcting capabilities inherent of digital processes ;)

Yeah, let's get a bunch of orders for some copies so we may make it worth his while doing all those LC keys at the same time and get a bulk discount ;)

I'll tell my experience unless it won't be usefull for you. I also have a HDJ81 JDM. When I brought it to Spain, I went to a Toyota dealer to duplicate the key as I only had one. Same story: the vin number was useless in their system. They said they needed the "master key code" to be able to duplicate it. They also told me each key would cost 90€ (135 dollars). I asked them to duplicate the existing key and they said it was impossible to do.

A month after, I took my key to a specialized key duplication shop and the made two copies in five minutes for 20€!! (30 dollars).

Just to have an idea of how skilled Toyota dealer guys are.

I would make an additional key as a spare.

Got a spare one made both in Japan and Switzerland for about U$35.00 by a locksmith.

All,
I am in the same boat of only having one key on my new HDJ81.

I'm not going to waste my time with Toyota especially since I only have the one and can't afford to give it up for a week.

So...when I am calling around to locksmiths, is there a name to the type of key this is? I have always called them "lasercut keys" but have no idea if that is accurate.

Craig.

Hdj 81 keys

OK here goes, this is my first time so um be gentle!
I got two keys cut for my 1990 HDJ 81 here in North Vancouver at
"Europe Lock & Key Ltd" 114 West Esplanade.
604 983 2511
key type ilco LXP90-p and I got 2 for about 70 bucks, they were a bit stiff at first but a bit of graphite lock lube fixed it up.
Dose anyone know if these trucks came with keyless entry, I got a fob that doesn't work. All the power door locks work fine from the drivers door.

they are pre fob power door locks. For 60 bucks from KMS carparts in Coquitlem you can buy a transmitter and it comes with two fobs. Pay a little more and get the fob system with an alarm and immobilizer.

I bought it for my 91 80(gasser) and hooked it up in an evening. awful nice to have the power door locks working with a remote.

Keyless entry system

Well I jumped to KMS and got the AutoLoc kit (on sale), so, what just follow the manual...?
I'll have to spend some time with it when I get some time.
In the meantime any other info would be helpful. tips, tricks, ect...

Also do try the graphite lock lube on all your door locks, it'll make em all real happy:)
