Hiya all,

I lost my only key to an HDJ81 Land Cruiser, and am wondering what to do after I heard from Toyota Japan, that they will not cut a key for a vehicle outside of the country. I have not tried Toyota Canada yet, but figured that since they are usually not too JDM friendly, and their computers do not recognize JDM stuff, that it would be pointless. I do not have the number on the key, just the VIN on the vehicle.

Any suggestions? I guess I could replace the ignition, but am unsure if it is the same as CDM part, or if I would need to get the part from Japan.

Any bright ideas would be appreciated fellow cruiserheads! Thanks!

Go talk with Lexus. I think the CDN Spec LX450 may use the same style key.

Consult a locksmith. You could probably use a USA FZJ80 ignition and get all the locks changed to match

When I bought my '92 HDJ-81 in Japan I went to a Toy dealer to get another key...they said that there is a number that you need, either on the ignition switch or the steering colum, before they can order/cut you a key.
If you are not in a hurry I would contact Mot and ask him to inquire at his Toy parts source for confirmation, and he can prolly order the key from his source with that number. Just a thought, but maybe easier than changing all the locks on the truck.

My friend lost his key of his HDJ81 too. He got a new one from lexus....cost him around $300.

Good locksmith should be able to take the door panel off or use the glove box lock to duplicate the key. I would call around. I have a locksmith who has cut lexus, mercedes, and volvo keys on site. Dont see why they could not cut a JDM Toyota key the same way.....

Thanks for all the input!

I have taken the dash panel off around the ignition, and can see no numbers on the ignition so far. Was Lexus able to cut the new key based on the VIN alone, or was another number required?

Thanks again,

Paul

Lost keys

Paul,
That vin # isn't 17 digits, our computer will not accept it. Was your key cut up the center of the shank like a Lexus key, or cut
down the outer edges like a Toyota key? We may need some help
from mac & romey. When they got there keys from a Lexus dealer, their receipt might have the part # of the key blank. The guys here at Tom Wood Lexus tell me the key code is stamped on
the passenger front door lock cylinder. I think if we can come-up with these, we can get a key cut.

Hiya all,

Just to follow up on the story for the record:

Since I could not find any code stamped on the steering column. I pulled the passenger (left) side door lock, and although there were a few numbers on it, none looked like a key code. I then pulled the Driver's (right) side door lock, and found a key code. So I think both JDM, and North American spec'd units have the key code on the Right hand door lock. Don't let "passenger side" throw you off on the right hand drive trucks. You will find it on the right side.

I then went to my local Lexus dealer (North Shore Lexus - North Vancouver) with door locks in hand hoping for the best. They were actually very helpful there, and fussed around for a while, and then said that they could possibly cut a key, but it would have to be done in Toronto, and there would be no guarantees. The cost would be 45.00 for a blank key, and 50.00 for the cut, so 95.00 total plus taxes, with no guarantee or refund if it did not work.

They gave me the name of a locksmith in Burnaby that they said may also do the job, so I headed over there and they were able to cut me one from the code for 40.00 plus taxes.

It worked fine, on both the door locks and ignition, so problem solved.

Thanks to all for the input!

Paul

Any idea HOW these keys are cut? Do they use a milling machine? Can they make a direct copy from a good original like with regular keys? Excuse my ignorance.... But the costs mentioned seem so preposterous, as if the keys were made of titanium or something like that... Glad to still have both my keys!...

I know that the machine that was used to cut mine "reads" the key and then cuts the key to the original code/specifications, in my case I did not even have an original Toyota key but a copy that came with the truck.

I paid $50 a key and was happy to do so as I had started the trip home 8 hours earlier by locking my only key in the cruiser while it was running and I was ~200km North of the nearest town (and it was -35°C out).

Are these special keys though? (microchip etc) I got a key cut at granville toyota from the code on the right side lock cylinder for $5. I was so surprised at the price I had 3 made. My truck's an HJ60...
