Dont get caught up in the Birfs need to be re done talk . I am sure the Birfs are fine . Its the Knuckle seals that need to be replaced and axle seals .
You are right, I have Birfs and knuckle seals synonymous in my head which is incorrect. If it's just the seals it is not expensive to replace. Just a mess.

Hello! Quick intro…I’ve had two 80 series a 100 series, and now a 200 series. I’ve always wanted a 40. I found one and it has good bones…needs some work, but nothing that looks crazy to me. My skills are basically that of a YouTube mechanic. Fluid changes, alternator changes, radiator changes…that is about my depth.

I looked at a 40 today and some rust, but nothing outrageous. Probably needs the DS floor pan replaced and the steps on each side could use some love, but overall nothing crazy that I saw…BUT it has been covered with something at some point. Frame is solid. Steering column (see pic) has a gasket (?) that needs to be replaced. Steering seems a little ‘not tight’ although power steering has been installed. Brakes seem a little soft. Like I mentioned…bones are pretty good. ARB 4.88 gears. Gauges need to be replaced. It has an auxiliary gas tank as well.

What are your thoughts on these pics?

Get it all pressure washed to see what you've got leaking. Looks like the gaskets.

That thing has a lift kit. If/when you get it, have your caster angle checked. It should be +1.5-2 degrees. If not it'll wander all over the place. Correctable with 2 and 4 degree shims. Once corrected, it'll feel like a different truck.
