Looking at a 76 New to me Help with value

Came across this about 5 years ago and now have the chance to purchase it. I would say that it has been driven about 40 miles or less in those 5 years. It did run 18 months ago, but battery died and I haven't gone back with jumpers to start it. Just wondering about a price on this one. I have read dustinuhls, "is it worth $3000.00?" and thought is this close to what that one is or what?

Lots of rust, non-stock carb. I bought the one I have for $3K and the rust was not nearly this bad. You will have $1K in sheet metal to do it right and a lot of hours. Not to mention if the engine and drive train need attention. If you got the time to do the body work offer $1500.
 
It'll need a hood, doors, rockers, 1/4s, rear sill, frame repair?, engine work, ???

I'd be leaning towards less than $1000 if the motor turns freely, $1500 if it runs without smoking.

You might want to pour some Marvels Mystery oil into the cylinders and let it soak before turning it over... Let it soak, and then turn it over without the plugs in. Then reinstall the plugs and start it up.

That said, I just started my 350 after it sat for 2 years... It's up to you. SBCs are plentiful... Although, 2Fs are around, they may be hard to find locally if you need one.
 
If it ran 18 months ago, no reason it should not run fine now, assuming it really was just the battery which you know better then us. But like bikesmurf said, put some marvel mystery oil in each cylinder and let it soak. That can avoid damage trying to turn it over the first time. Mine sat well over 7 years. I can verify not running for 7 years based on old posts on this site when it was first sold to 2 PO's ago, and no one had stated it till I got it. Runs fine now.

Vehicle is got some rust, nothing that would scare me. Sine you know it ran, and know a little history 2k is probably the high end I would pay, but would probably expect to get it for less then that. There was a 76 near me on CL for 2,900 head pulled off and motor rusted beyond repair, similar rust to this one. But it was a 1 owner, complete including sales documents, books everything that it rolled off the lot with when new, plus a PTO. He could not sell it, put it on ebay and got 3,800. South east can be crazy. Bottom line it is worth what you are willing to pay and be happy with when you see it at your house. In some areas availability of them is few and far between and waiting for a better one not always a good option.
 
I'd not pay more than $500 unless I saw it running.
 
It's not far from the office, so I might head over there on Friday with a battery and MMO and try to get it running. I hate to see them just sit and rust and this owner keeps going back and forth on weather to sell or not.

With that much rust exposed you will definitely find more as you dig into it. Hope you're handy with a welder! Also consider the amount of hours into repairing/replacing just the rusty areas. Or just wheel the snot out of that thing! Look up the replacement panel prices here Body Parts . Coatings to give you an idea and try to get it for dirt cheap if you go that route!
 
I would be maxed out at $1200 if it were me. Unless you've got mad skills it's going to cost A LOT to fix the rust on that rig.
 
Only buy this truck if you're going to do the work yourself or can horse-trade for it.

$1500 would be an ok price, IMO. Every couple of hundred you work off the price is a couple hundred you can spend on body panels or steel and welding wire/gas. I'd consider sourcing a new door than trying to fix the old one, but late model doors aren't floating around everywhere. I've seen far worse, priced far higher. For a bargain resto, that entire rear sill can be replaced with a 2x2" steel square tube, suitably drilled.
 
Thanks for all the replies on this rust-on-wheels. My idea was to remove all doors, top/sides and run it open. Someone has talked about the top and sides already. Haven't said no to the owner yet. May still try to start it soon and do a little more checking out. I know worst nightmares have been brought back to life.

I completely understand. I thought I was over wanting one of these until I came across that '75 I'm looking to purchase now. Seems like every year when the weather starts warming up that I get the "itch" to go find one again. I've been burned a couple of times looking for one, but I keep going back. These things are like a drug or an ex-girlfriend that you can't get over... You just keep coming back!
