please don't paint your rig black, no offense to those who have, but IMHO original colors are the way to go. Go mustard, dune beige, or olive brown.

Once you go black, you'll wanna go back

Hey, I personally love black cars too , when I bought my fj I thought about painting black, it looks good on everything else right? But for whatever reason, purist reasons aside, fj's,bj's just rarely look good!!!! HONESTLY DONT DO IT ;) JUST MY OPINION

thier is a pic of one on the rear bumper thread right now

There's nothing wrong with a black 40 :flipoff2:

Hello,

Mine's black. 1973 J40 w/v-8. I painted it myself with a low gloss "rat rod" paint. I painted the fenders silver. Looks pretty good. It will take scratches real good since I painted it with primer/"rhino"paint/and 3-4 heavy coats of a good dupont black.

The weather's lousy in the Northwest right now. I'll get a picture up as soon as I can take a decent one. Also, I have the dreaded diamond plate(no rust though) and it's definetely not a purest FJ but it works.

Black is cool.....

Just keep in mind that black paint, more than any other color, shows up dirt and dust quite well. Having had a couple of black vehicles, I know this all too well. It was a pain keeping my black '69 Cobra looking nice on hot, dusty August nights while cruising.

Personally I feel there is a fine line where black looks good and doesn't. On a mildly built rig with a hard top, I don't like it. But with the top off it doesn't look bad. The more lift and subsequently bigger tires black starts looking better. Maybe I am just too picky. If you have a hard top, leave what is supposed to be white white though. It provides a little color break-up and helps cool the interior too. Just my $0.02

Go Black

Im thinking about going the same route. If people are upset about you not going to a stock color than keep everything stock, no lifts, no p/s, no sliders, no no no etc... If you like black go for it..

And another thing.... Dark colors, especially gloss black, will show up bodywork imperfections badly. If your bodywork is not straight, you might want to rethink this. If your bodywork IS straight and you don't mind keeping it clean, go for it.

Another consideration is accent colors with black. A white bezel with a black body gives it a late 50's, early 60's quaint look. A chrome bezel, for example, would look a bit more modern.

I agree with the black and chrome. Siilver and chrome would work too.

The bottom line is its your truck and your money, so do what you want.

Paint it what ever color you like man, it's your truck ;) I agree the white bezel and hardtop cap really set off the classic lines of a 40 though. Here's another color I think looks really sharp on a 40 -

Agreed 100%, green '73. I think your exactly right........................I happen to think "earth colors" look best on cruisers in their natural enviroment ie offroad ,on trails,on the rocks . But I drive a Smurf Blue '78 ,so what the hell do I know ?? La LA La LA La La [smurf theme song]:D
