Locking a differential - IS THIS TRUE ??

anyone ever unlock one hub up front on the auto locker. This would give you all the turning before with a little less traction. I talked to aussie and they suggested this for snow and ice vs running the full lock.

I have aussie in the rear and will not drive another cruiser without one. The traction increase is really great..

run what you have, when you notice a lack of traction, start figuring out what you "need" to improve things, based on your usage.

in your position, I would run the autolocker rear and fix the clutches (search, I think it has been covered) then put the lsd in the front

I have a 1976 FJ55 - so the setup is similar to your 60 wagon. I have a Lockrite in the rear and it works great. I want a locker in the front and thought about putting an auto locker in [the front] but decided against it. If you get bound up and give the skinny pedal a little too much love you could 'snap, crackle and pop' your front end.

Yes.

Having the locker in the rear with the LSD in the front is a good configuration.

I agree.

I also vote for locker in the rear and lsd in front, or sell the lsd and put the money towards a selectable locker for the front.

Now I have a plan together - thanks again to entire IH8MUD community !!

OK, I'll confess. I have the 2lo mod (thanks to lowtideride), but have pretty much no clue when to use it. I have no lockers. I use 4lo maybe twice a month, understand the need for (and could have used) rear (and possibly front) lockers, but 2lo has me confused.

Also, non-locked, what's the danger of using 2lo? Why did Mr. Toyota not have the transfer case set up like this from the factory?

2L.

Locked front, hard surface (Rubicon, Katemcy) Mr Toyota did not put auto-lockers in Cruisers.

I am currently installing a 2lo manual vacuum-switch (to replace the automatic vacuum-solenoids). This enables MANUAL switching 'in' and 'out' of 4wd, regardless of H or LO. Got the idea from Thread by Spook.

If you have the HUBS un-locked, and put it into 4LO without the 2LO mod, the front drive-shaft, diff, and axles, will all turn when you drive. The hub free-wheels. With the HUBS un-locked and in 4LO WITH the mod, you will prevent the front drive-shaft, diff, and axles from turning.

2WD LO situations now have less moving parts and that has to be a good thing !!

Good question, haven't heard that before.

Why did Mr. Toyota not have the transfer case set up like this from the factory?

The 2LO is not essential, maybe even not necessary (some would say). Lot of people interested in it though. Discussions / related threads:

Non-vacuum 2LO modification
FJ62 2LO mod
Push Button 2LO
Vacuum control valve / 2LO mod
Faulty 4WD solenoidTransfer Switch

Fixed.

If the LSD has more than 10K on it, then clutches are probably pretty worn, and really not worth much. Its like ****ing on a forest fire.

I have heard this before and have become wary. The LSD was a freebie from a rig with 440K Km's. Last week I started spinning the rear wheels in 2H going up a sandy hill and both wheels were spinning hard. Then put it into 2LO and one wheel spins and the other slowly rotates but not really spinning. Did help and was enough to get me out. Not sure if this is typical for LSD or not.

So the Lock-right is going in the back, and the LSD in the front. Fixed.

LSD's are torque biased....meaning, the faster one wheel spins (and is stuck), the more torque is transfered to the the wheel that's not spinning (and has traction)

unfortunately, with the locker in the other diff, you'll never want to spin the LSD enough to get it to work.

Having owned a LSD for a short time, they are just that - LIMITED. Never worked when I wanted it to, and I was too gentle with spinning the tires enough to get it to kick in. And, as mentioned, as soon as you NEED it to work (tire in the air), it won't.

If you like to do burnouts, and drive with your right foot on the floor, install it....if you drive gently and prefer to take care of your rig, lock the rear and leave the front open until you are ready to either change your driving for a front autolocker OR spring the $ for a selectable front locker.

You only need to use 2lo if you have an auto locker in the front diff. If you don't have that, then use 4lo.

2lo is handy for all sorts of things

*towing a heavy load
*idling along in stop and go traffic (not stop=better mileage)
*flipping a Uturn on a tight trail
*learning to drive stick (wayyyyy better in low gear)

Temporary situation here with only one (1) locker. I think I'd get more use from it in the rear until I...

...spring the $ for a selectable front locker.

Yep.
