My 74 fj is coming along pretty good. I have 4 inch susp lift and 35 inch ssr's. Soon to have a 78 axle and power steering with hydro assist. I need more traction, I have enough money right now to buy one aussie locker. Should I stay with the stock 4.11 gears or should i get lower gears. I mainly wheel with it, i sometimes tool around town a bit and i drive on the roads to get to wheeling spots. I hope this helps please give advice.

You only have enough money for one lunchbox locker right now right.

Do you have money to regear it???

Off road completly I see no reason to regear.

And I agree with Tex.. weld the rear and lock up the front. If you do have some extra fundage get a set of longfields.. Hell get the longfields anyway..

did a EZ-Lock for PHAT MAX last night in about an hour....would have been quicker, but we kept checking the skies for tornadoes (missed us, north by 2 miles...never left the garage)

Aussie works the same, better price, and outta be an easy install. IMO, install in the rear, see you like it's handling.

Max called me within 10 minutes to note that the "locker kick" I had warned him about had already hit him once! lol

You could put it in the rear and if it isn't enough move it to the front and weld the rear. If you're mostly offroad you might want to just put it in the front and weld the rear to begin with. As for regearing that is for correcting RPM at highway speeds. Don't waste your money. If you have enough money to regear you could probably afford a lower geared tranny like a 420 or 465. That would give more improvement offroad than any R&P would.

I was thinking about lower gears. But am unsure now. Do need to figure it out b4 i order. Do you guys think the 4.11'a are enough for wheeling or should i go say 4.88's

I've wheeled for 15 years on stock 4.11 gearsets....38.5 tires right now. I don't change cause they are so common....spare sets are easy to come by.

Installing a lunchbox locker like the Aussie doesn't require you touch the ring or pinion gears or the side bearings and caps...in the rear axle, it only requires removing the rear cover, pulling the axle shafts, yanking the side/spider gears from inside, installing the locker, and buttoning up. If you were doing a full Detroit or ARB, then you outta sweat gear expenses....

Thanks guys... So aussie locker it is... Just gotta work up the balls to call and spend more money on my rig :) Shouldnt be too hard. I guess i will put the first one i buy in the rear and once i sell more parts from the 2nd parts cruiser I will buy the other.

How do the Aussies compare to the Lock-Rite? My mechanic friend won't touch Lock-Rites, he says they break. But if you are going to tear it all the way down for a Detroit, you may as well go ARB! I don't want to spend all that $ on a locker right now, which brings me back to lock-rite or aussie.

How do these two compare?

Thanks!

4.11s are fine with 35s. And like Woody said they are very common. Lock-rites and Aussie are almost identicle. I and most of my trail buds use Lock-rites without problems. They don't have a history of breakage as far as I know. We have been running them for a few years with flawless performance. We went through Petes rear axle last year and we could barely tell his used and abused unit from the brand new one I had ordered in for my rig. Needless to say I was very impressed. Since I opened my shop I have installed a few in various Toyotas and have yet to see a problem.

Do you know where I could get a used set?

"Lockers? what should you do?"

well... what about "buy a fully-locked 80 and put on the CDL switch and the pin 7 mod?"

BWAHAHAHA....!!!

errr.... sorry, pardon the intrusion, back to the 80 forum.. :D (sheepish grin...)
