While under my LJ70 today, I noticed a small leak. I am guessing it is only a seal, since it isn't making any noise, nor does it have any issues shifting in and out of 4 wheel drive or 4 wheel low/high.

I have manual locking hubs and a green button on my dash to push for 4 wheel drive & a manual shifter on the floor as well to put it into low or high. So now I have to ask the stupid question. Is this an electronic or mechanical transfer case?

Toyodiy lists the follow types.
36103 CASE SUB-ASSY, TRANSFER
36103-60120 MECHANICAL TYPE 1 € 1,273.34
36103-60130 ELECTRIC TYPE 1 € 1,273.34

Also, does anyone know if the LJ70 Transfer Case shares any common parts with the 4Runner or other USA trucks, particularly seals?

Thanks,
Don

The green button on your dash is to activate the vacuum shift on your transfer case,I think the seals are the same as any split case found on 40 60 and 70 series cruisers

I would ask Beno or Georg at Valley Hybrids

dash button will do 4x4 high. the floor lever once actuated will engage 4x4 low, without the need to push the green button.
both provided you already engaged the manual hubs.

manual says also to drive every now and then with the transfer engaged to lubricate the front transmission. I do that if I find a dirt rack or simply engage transfer without the front hubs if I am on hard surface.

you are not meant to drive on low on hard surfaces, can damage transmission.

pm an email address and Ill send the lj owner manual.

Don't know if my LJ78 is different or not, but I can engage 4L without the hubs locked. Give me a 2L effectively. I use it when backing up my travel trailer. Nice and slow....

My T-Case leaks too. At both outputs. Ive been putting it off, but should deal with it sooner than later. Let us know where you end up finding the seals. And the guys above are right, it is a standard vacuum actuated split transfer case. Same as some 'heavy duty' landcruiser models.

Internal trans/ x case seal? Or out put seal leak. Check for overfill of either trans or case. Look real careful. Is easy 1st step.
