There was a recent Supreme Court ruling that is getting traction for Kansas residents that paid KCMO taxes in 2012. The KS Dept of Revenue has stated that they are interpreting the decision to apply to the KCMO taxes.
Bottom line is that this should result in a tax refund for your family, but only in 2012, and 2011 if you can amend the return within 3 years of when you filed that original return.
In 2012, the Kansas tax rate was .45% higher than Missouri, so you ended up paying some taxes to Kansas due to that higher rate. You were not able to get a credit for the taxes paid to KCMO. A recent case just affirmed that states should allow this credit. In 2013 the Kansas rate changed to be lower than Missouri, so we don’t see this to be any benefit after 2012.
Now to spin this to some sort of tech......
