Lifter Diameters Out of Spec

I am building a new cylinder head for my 97. At this point, I am trying to verify that the lifters and lifter bores are within spec so that the lifter oil clearance is also within spec. This is with a brand-new Toyota head along with new Toyota lifters and I am out of spec for some reason.

As an example, The Intake Valve-1 lifter bore diameter is, 1.3395" (spec is 1.3386" - 1.3394"). The lifter diameter is, 1.3365" (spec is 1.3372" - 1.3376"). This gives an oil clearance of 0.0030" (spec is 0.0009" - 0.0022", with a 0.0028" maximum).

The primary culprit here is the lifter diameter, but these are new Toyota lifters so what might be going on? Has anyone encountered this before and is it a non-problem?

My 1FZ-FE doesn't have valve lifters. It does have DOHC, 4 valves per cylinder uses buckets and shims

If your 100 percent sure of your specs, measurements and measuring tools you can return them. No I've never seen this issue before and it would be very surprising to find.

I have found variation in terminology several times, which has definitely caused me some confusion. In this case, what you (and many others) call a bucket is what Toyota calls a lifter in the FSM. So, I think they are the same part.

You are right to ask that question. It is not so easy making these measurements accurate to 0.0001" especially in lifter bores. I don't know if I would bet the house on my measurements being accurate to that level. In this case, for both measurements, I am using the same Mitutoyo vernier calipers calibrated at 2.000" with a standard. I am more confident with the lifter diameters since they are easy to measure, and I have checked the values with a micrometer. Also, the oil clearance is a calculated difference between two values very close to the same size, which gives me some confidence as well.

I guess I was hoping this was a non-issue and if it is not, yikes...

I can do that. The lifter bores are very challenging to measure correctly using telescoping gauges, which I am.
 
Unless you are very precise and the measuring devices are calibrated to perfection you are probably perfectly fine.

I have done loads of measuring to the ten thousandths on aircraft engines and I still make multiple measurements of the same item and then do averaging.

Imop you will be fine with your measurements.

I have arrived at the same conclusion. Anyone can buy measuring instruments on eBay that provide digits to the 10 thousandths, but without doing what you have said above, the numbers you get from them may, or may not, be accurate to that level. An aircraft engine justifies the painstaking work required to make those measurements with accuracy. In my case, I think I will trust Toyota.
