LFD Off-Road 460 cross bars

Speaking of cleats, I've been wanting someone to add cleats to their roof racks for a very long time!
Okay, think cleats like on a boat dock, but much smaller, maybe 3"-6" long spaced about every 2 feet, so maybe 3 or 4 per left and right side of the rack.
How handy would that be??? WAY faster and easier than tying knots, come-alongs, etc.
When you go to the favorite Home box store for some 2x4's, PVC pipe, conduit, etc. all you need is a bit of rope and it would easily tie down on the cleat! No need for all those fancy knots we've all long forgotten. I actually asked Tim at Gamiviti if he could add some to my rack, but as accommodating as he is, I don't think he was into the extra work.
Albeit, since I have my RTT, I never would probably use them. Can't tie anything to my rack anyways.

Nice having another option, but it kind of looks like a few other offerings available. I'd like to see something truly different, not just in style but functionality, e.g. pre-wired for a light bar and/or proximity lights, maybe cut-outs for such lights, cleats for easy tie-downs and???

There's this...

Not for the GX460 but throwing this out there. Maybe someone can reach out and have them do crossbars & bracket for a GX460. Looks like a much cleaner solution than the LFD ones.

Since this has become somewhat of an unofficial rack thread. I’m adding this as well.

I sent them an email and will post if they ever make them. Told them I would buy a set of 4 most likely will get 8. I like the price, channels, and brackets better than the LFD ones. Niserack looks way more versatile.

We may be picking up steam on the GX460 platform. Expedition One looks like they'll have a rack pretty soon.

As always Expo1 makes great looking stuff but their CS is crap and they never deliver on time. I went through the Ram rear bumper debacle with them over on the Portal and I'd have a hard time giving them my money out of principle. But yes, the GX is definitely exploding as one of the to Overland platforms at the moment.

Hi I'm Jason designer of the "NiseRack". For whatever reason I didn't receive your email, not sure if it got "filtered" or what. If you read the "about us" page on the website, I designed the rack because I wanted something that no one made. I spent a year getting all my ducks in a row so I could produce them.

What that means for you folks is that I can produce something for you just as easy. The "nuts and bolts" have been figured out. If someone could give me the dimensions for the rails I can and will design something for you to use. It's possible what I already have will probably work as Toyota seems to use the same rails on a lot of their products.

You can shoot me an email at Jason@NiseRack.com or I can check back on this thread for updates. If someone wants to post some decent pics of the rails I could probably tell you quickly if it will work or if I'm going to have to design something new. If I have to design something new it will probably take about a month before I could ship something.

Here's a couple of threads on another forum about my product...

Just saw this post. I think I replied to your pm. I'll take 6 cross bars. Here are the pictures. I can send more and maybe video chat with you as I measure and show you things. It looks like there is a channel under it that the cross bars grip onto - see pic. Now I see why the LFD brand has those two adjustable screws to adjust to the curve of the rack. I also see why theirs rest on top, so that it can tighten down and sandwich the rail from the channel below. There are three cover brackets which I bet go to the mounting bolts. I measured at all three spots. There is a slight curve to the rack. But your style looks like t-bolts that slide into a side channel that we don't have :( I haven't taken it apart but the part with the channel facing down looks like to attached to the rear part of the rack. Maybe it can slide out somehow.

Here you can see the 1/8" lip and the gap under the lip of the rail.

See that little gap, that's the lip the cross bars are gripping onto

Let me think about his a little bit. The design is fundamentally different so it will take some thought. If it were similar I could have something out probably rather quickly but this will take a bit of design and testing. I'd love to tell you that I'm a full time rack designer with a team of engineers on standby but that's not the case.

I do this because I enjoy the problem solving part of it and I like delivering value for folks. I've got a concept bouncing around in my head but nothing solid. If I come up with something I'll update this thread.

Thanks!

I am looking forward to see what you come up with!

Well, I pulled the trigger on the JW Offroad black aluminum rack with 7 crossbars yesterday. Hoping for an install date before EOM so I can get the Christmas tree up there.

I went with JW for a few reasons.
1. I like the design, even though the sides are a little busy
2. They are local and I like to support the small business around here and install will be easier to schedule
3. They seem to innovate continuously on attachments to the rack
4. It's one of the cheaper racks

Honestly, I don't see myself using it very often but it looks cool and should come in handy once in a while. "Christmas, and extended trips"

It looks to be a quality rack, looking forward to some pics and your thoughts once installed.

I'm also very interested! Looking to buy an inexpensive rack setup to mount a waterport, some lights, and occasional overflow when camping. Any update on whether it's feasible to design something?

Still waiting, and even though I keep following up, it looks like I’ll miss the end of Nov and have to put the tree on the roof rather than a rack. Pretty much the reason I wanted the rack....Kind of irritated, but it was always a possibility.

I feel your pain. I ordered my Rhino Rack back in October and was told that both the platform and BackBone side rails were in stock and ready to ship only to find out that the BackBone side rails were on back order after placing and paying for my order. I've had the platform assembled and against the wall waiting for nearly a month now. I will not have the side rails until after the first of the year and that's if they actually follow through with the late December ship date which is already the second ship date they've given me. First world problems but nevertheless extremely annoying and disappointing.
