let there be light... Hella light

1.4 - those look like the ones! ;-) I'll be psyched for some more light and to FINALLY have my Hella's pop on/off with the flick of the OEM High Beams....

Are you running the stock 55w Free Form bulbs? I hear they are about 25% more light than the old 4000 throws with the 100w bulb. I ordered the 100w bulb to put into the Free Forms from the guys at Susquehanna Motorsports Home Page and they say it rocks - about 2x the light from the old 4000's... I'm not sure about double, I want to see it for myself.

They can also sell the 130w bulbs and the guy thinks it would be bright as all hell... but that they'd only last about 25 hours!! ;-) No thanks...

sorry for the delay - i have the stock 55's for now, honestly, they aren't terribly bright. the way i have the light directed they do add a decent amount of light to the middle of the road - you actually see what you may be driving into very well.

130's - you will melt the snow in front of your rig! :-)

I've been stuck with a new job so I haven't done any more mods (hey, it's not like i'm a hurry to destroy my '06 LC...) but I'll start doing some more soon enough I think. Adding in 100's will certainly be one of the items.

Hella install went "pretty" well - need to get pics posted tonight. HOWEVER - I have a problem and Jim nailed it...

Jim Chow - "What is your voltage reading between 2A and ground (say, pin 1A) on the harness side of the plug when the DRL's would normally be on? I thought it would be high when the DRL's are supposed to be on regardless of cutting the wire at pin 3A."

Damn Jim - you are a wizard - and I was DEAD wrong on pin 2A. It IS cold with the key in the Acc position, but it's HOT w/ the engine running -

My result last night after the install was that the Hella's work "on command" with the OEM dash swtich (engine running or not, or any configuration of pkg lights, Hi's, Lows etc etc... - so THAT is good..). With the engine off (key in Acc position) the HiBeams ALSO control the Hellas - that is good. BUT, with the enging RUNNING the Hella's are ON when all lights are OFF, or PKG lights on - then they go off with Low beams, then back on with Hi's - :whoops: SO, NOW I HAVE HELLA DRL'S!!! :D

Almost there though - I think pin 2B might work... Any suggestions Jim?

Maybe I'll just go wire-to-wire tonight... :meh:

still haven't resolved the wiring yet. It works ok since I pretty much always just leave my lights on...

here are the pics. I think the addition of the Hella's make the front end look so much better than just the Sahara that looks a little "bare" in the hoop area

f2l, I REALLY like the way your rig looks! The matching bumper looks GREAT! That being said, I have a question and a request:

1. What brand/size winch are you using?
2. Would it be too much trouble to take a photo straight-on from the front of the vehicle at about bumper height? I want to see how much of the undercarriage shows with the ends of the bumper angling upward (there's a guy in my neighborhood who has a 100 with some sort of front bumper [I haven't stopped him to see what brand it is], and because it is so "thin" on the ends, a LOT of the undercarriage shows - and it doesn't look that good to me. My guess is that he's got a TJM or another brand, because yours looks really good, and his doesn't. Oh yeah, the lights look great too!

Man I think you are overcomplicating things with your lights. That should have been a one day job. I wish you lived closer so I could help you with it as I think my previous posts are unclear to you. A toggle switch wired so that you can either A) turn on your Hellas at any time, or B) have the Hellas turn on when you flip your high beams on. It's that simple, just a switch to move between two simple circuits. So you would have an On/Off switch, and a second switch to move between the two functions.

Ok - this is a pic for Jim Chow to look at. I've been PMing him but I can't send a pic..

Jim? Thoughts? But i am not sure if B1 or B2 is COLD if the High Beams are off... if so would this work?

This diagram looks fine to me. You can also get relays with dual 87 poles, one for each lamp (preferred).

In this case, you want as much light on the subject as possible, so I don't see why you would want to bother with being able to manually switch it. In 15 years of high speed desert driving, I have yet to encounter a situation where I would want my driving lights on, but NOT my highbeams. So I'd just wire them to the high beam circuit (that replaces your switch, but retain the relay as is, so you just use the highbeam circuit to trip the relay). Less hassle.

My $0.02,

dnp - I am using a Warm M12000, BIG sucker - but the Bilsteins seem to hold the weight ok with the stock T-bars cranked a bit. I'll try to get you a straight on pic as well.

thanks LC4life - but I actually don't want to have to switch the circuit. I have the Tacoma OEM switch on the dash and I'd rather not have another one, or a non-OEM switch. For that matter, I don't want to have to flip a swtich at all for changing circuits. I just want the Hella's to turn ON WITH the High beams and/or with the OEM switch. I have it wired ok now with the relay and OEM dash swtich - works well, and it really didn't take that long at all. However, I made a bad choice to try and tap into one of the DRL relay's for the Highbeam trigger. I am now going to investigate tapping into another location for the highbeam trigger, either under the dash or near the fuse.

FINALLY - closing this thread out since I just finished the last bit of wiring.

I've always had the hella's set to turn on manually with the OEM Tacoma switch, but I've always wanted to ALSO have them light up when the High Beam's were turned on. Finally figured it out, with the help of some guys on Car Alarm, Car Stereo, Mobile Video, and Cruise Control Info for Installers and it's all wired up and works PERFECT. :bounce2:

So now, I have the Hella's operational all by themselves at ANY time, even when truck is comlpetely off. AND, they also come on every time I hit the High Beams.

Here is the diagram.... :grinpimp:

wow thanks alot this is very helpful to me getting all my stuff ready for my upgrade when it gets warmer. thanks again

alright R3 - glad it will help someone... after I hooked it up incorrectly about, oh, 8 times!!! I finally asked for help on that 12 volt forum (not as good as mud, but one guy was really helpful).
The wiring is all 16ga except from the first relay (87) to the lights, (30) to the battery and (85) to the ground - those are 12ga

I love the options of having the light whenever I want it regardless of the state car (on, off, whatever) and ALSO having them come on with the HB's - you'll love it too..

Loud - come on, join the wiring team!! :D

Sorry for diggin' up this old thread, but a quick update wasn't worth a new one...

upgraded the Hella's to the 130W bulbs that Loud GAVE me (you rock Loud!!!) - and wow, they make a pretty nice difference as seen in the pic. Right has 130w, left has 100w.

I also upgraded the IPF's in the bumper to 85W Hella Yellow bulbs. Harder to see the difference but the 55w>85w upgrade is a bit diminished due to the slight yellow on the bulb, so they still look about 55w. They do, however, put out a nice clear"ish" looking yellow light that might help in the early morning Seattle fog on my way out fishing (and they look damn good... :hillbilly:)

No other wiring issues per the previous posts, all relay's, diodes and connections holding strong. It's SO SO SO nice having the Hella's flip on with EITHER the flip of the high beams OR a touch of the OEM switch on the dash.

Ya, I want to do the setup you have, but I think a shock load of 430w isnt healthy for the electrical system.

No need for all of that high wattage drain. Retrofit some 35W HID's into the Hellas like I did.

I've actually put it in my planbook, but not till September. The days are getting longer, I don't need HIDs in suburbia.
