a week or so ago my '95 4runner sprung a leak (or so I thought)- i looked all over and finally found that the oil filter was loose... my 16yr old brother had changed the oil for me cause i was out of town and letting him borrow it... hes normally pretty good about things like this, and i went about 1500miles before it started. did he not tighten the filter enough or do the filters on the 3vz motors just work themselves loose every so often? has this happened to anyone else?

What brand of filter is it?

I've not aware of a filter loosening problem on this engine. But 2 years ago my daughter had the oil changed in her '08 Corolla and they put some no-name "lowest bidder" filter on it. It popped off the engine a couple of days later. Meineke bought her a new engine.

sometimes the gasket on the oil filter stay on the engine when removing, then you put the new oil filter on that make 2 gasket one on the other.so it leek.

The one and only time I had this happen it took me 3 days to get the oil cleaned off everything. It didn't just leak it blew. I religiously check the filter for the old gasket from that day on.

The Toyota gaskets are rounded and sit down in a groove so they don't normally have this problem. I have seen a lot of aftermarket filters that have a square cut oring and they suction themselves to the engine. So when you remove the filter the gasket stays. As jynx stated they usually spray oil all over the place though. It seems to me that it probably just wasn't quite tight enough when he originally did it.
