Na. No subtle hint. Just trying to line you up on what drain plugs go were, other options available, and experiences from said other options. I’m sure cruiser patch kits are squared away. They’ve got a good reputation and wouldn’t lead you astray.
thanks man, the thread reminder did help.

Can someone please point me to the correct transfer case oil specification for a 2018 post-facelift LC200? There appears to be a rabbit hole around GL-5 or not. The owners manual states Toyota Genuine Transfer Gear Oil LF SAE 75W. Penrite's website suggests Penrite Pro Gear GL-5 75W-85 (same as diffs). Another website recommends Penrite Pro Gear 75W90. Any assistance greatly appreciated.

…The owners manual states…

Safe to say that’s the best answer.

If you still want to deviate from that, avoiding GL5 due to its well-known effect on yellow metals and ready availability of GL4 options would be a logical choice.

The part number was recently updated to

00279-DGOLF.

The old version in the metal can (08885-01806) has been discontinued and is slowly being used up.

Either version will work fine. The price difference is about $50/liter.

Get the Toyota fluid like dudemancool said and be done with it.
No doubts if it works or if it's safe. There's giant transfer case fluid thread if you want to spend hours going down the rabbit hole only to realize, just get 2 bottles of the new toyota fluid ...

I’ve used Amsoil 75-90 previously as well as others and have had no issues.

This has been rehashed ad nauseum elsewhere, but depending on the year you have a few outcomes:

1-it’s fine, you’re in spec
2-you’re running out of spec fluid and are causing yellow metal pitting/damage without knowing it as it’s not critical yet
3-maybe on borrowed time (worst case)

@Sajan does have a point however as you are seemingly wrapped around the axle on pedantic part numbers while tossing out recommended spec’s fluid wholesale. HTH.

I find it ironic you are this tedious about the plugs, the gaskets but then go off book for the transfer case fluid spec.
does it matter, no but ...i find it ironic.

No, I just wanted make sure I have the right gaskets because there’s really no margin of error because I want them to fit, not fail. As far as diff fluid or transfer case fluid is concerned, it’s fluid. And I’ve used it on the transfer case without issues and others have as well. But doesn’t mean I didn’t do my due diligence to make sure it worked before I went a head and did it.

I stand corrected. I will look more into the transfer case oil further. I will just use the Amsoil for the diff fluid. How many quarts do I need?

I am not trying to argue with you...but I am just saying...if Toyota calls for 75W low viscosity fluid (with now known additives based on someone testing it..)....that is what I would go with.
Will differential fluid work, sure. Clearly people are using it..
Will 75W Ravenol with diff additives work, yes.

No one here has 10,000 transfer cases to test over a 250,000 mile period to truly have objective data. But at the end of day, what are we getting from deviating from Mr. T's recommendation? Cost savings of $50?

I went with Ravenol because I couldn't find the Toyota fluid. I will source it for the next change.

I think close to 2qts for the front diff and around 4.5 for the rear. This is a guess though as I'm going off memory. Plug info into Amsoil's website and they will tell you.

Sagan I agree with you on the transfer case. I will definite look into the Toyota fluid. I’m going by antiquated info that I remembered from back in the day with my first LC200. I just double checked the recent data from the other thread that was just recently analyzed. Before earlier In the thread, some people used it in the transfer case as did I and no issues. So I am re evaluating the transfer case fluid. The diff fluid, they work with almost anything. I’ve know people to put in 75-130. So I will pick up 2Liters then.

Thanks

2 quarts is more than enough.

1.4 to 1.5 liters (1.5 to 1.6 US qts, 1.2 to 1.3 Imp. qts)
