I need to start the search for a three piece crossmember for a 3/82 fj40 soon. Can anyone fill me in on what year and model trucks they came on. I know 8/80 and newer fj40's, but didn't they also come on some fj60's? Of so what years? Are they still available from Toyota?
 
yes a 3 piece crossmember came on the FJ60 series, 1981-1984?,
but it is too long for the 40 series,
not sure if the side brackets would have the same bolt pattern to the frame
the 60 crossmember bolted from the top to the side brackets and the 40 bolted from the bottom to the side brackets

the 60 series crossmember is easier to find and most likely can be made to work but it is not a bolt in without modification
 
The 60 series crossmember can be made to work. The side brackets have the wrong angle for the 40 frame but it is close enough to work. I welded the side brackets to the frame. I have a 40 series crossmember stashed away for the redo coming up next year. Someone posted up some pictures of the various crossmembers a while back so if you search around you will see them.
 
Three versions of the L brackets for the 40 series. One for short mid wheel base. One for the FJ45. Third for the HJ47. Two versions of the crossmember itself. 8/80-9/82. The 10/82+. The change in the crossmember 10/82 is for the H55F, the section for the front driveshaft is deeper for more clearance. Toyota gave the L brackets different part numbers 10/82 but they stayed the same. Have a pair front 3/82 FJ40 and 3/83 BJ42. The letters and numbers stamped into them are the same. The crossmember changed.

So searching for a 3/82 FJ40 L brackets need to be from a 8/80+ short or mid wheel base. If running a stock.four speed can be any 8/80+ crossmember from a 40 series. Switching to a H55F need the 10/82+ style. Besides the 60 series people modify there is also the pre 8/80 BJ40 version which I've never seen just know they used the crossmember.

Think Amir is selling a set for the HJ47. The L brackets are different shape and shorter. Same with the FJ45. The frame is narrower in the area the L brackets bolt to the frame on long wheel base 40 series. Never verified the angle differences. Sold my HJ47 brackets a while ago.

I will be going back with stock 4 speed/split case on my 3/81. So the only direct bolt on will be 8/80-9/82 L brackets and crossmember, correct? Are L brackets specific to a side or either our interchangeable?
 
There is a thread on this subject. Crossmember set 8/80+ except for the HJ47 and FJ45 with bolt to the frame and a four speed 8/80+ that the case is made to except the crossmember.
