My son and I have been working on an in-car GPS system. Lots of great info on this forum. We use his HP laptop (running Vista, X64 beta 2) GPS receiver is Mighty GPS, USP. USA Photomaps + terrafetcher. Installed in vehicle using

Also added the screen support.

Good test today. System worked great.

Thanks for the link. I'm looking at doing a simillar setup so all mounting ideas are invaluable to me so I can design the best setup for my needs.

Have you had any problems yet or do anything different next time?

What made you choose this system?

I would do it the same next time.

I read good reviews of the ram-mount products, and liked the versatility of their total system. Seemed like they had done a good job in thinking through the engineering of their product line.

Finished product is better than I expected. Will buy again.

Did you use thd double ball mount or swingarm, and is this in an 80 series? If so could you post pics of it mounted? I am mostly curious about what mounting points you used and how it affects passenger legroom.

It's in my 60. I used the double ball mount. Digi camera is loaned out for a week, so can't take pics. I mounted two legs to the seat bolts, on the floor. The third I mounted to the bottom of the dash, just below the left edge of the glove box. The legs are aluminum rod, you bend them to locate the mount where you want. Very simple system. I located the lower ball mount just to the left and above the passengers left leg.

Thanks for the reply to my query. I'm tossing up whether to use a ram mount system or to make a bracket myself that mounts to the passenger grab rail on the dash. I need a system that provides maximum legroom for the passenger.

Does the ram mount allow you to rotate the laptop around so the driver can access the laptop too if need be?

The Ram-Mount is extremely rugged, and easy to install. I considered fabbing a mount, and wasn't worried about aesthetics (my 60 is about function, not form). The Ram-Mount is far more rugged than I could have fabbed. Plus it is easy to readjust the location of the laptop. The passenger can comfortably use it, or it could be adjusted to be viewed by the driver. Also can be adjusted so we can watch DVD's while stretched out in the back!

Make sure the get the screen support. The weak link in laptops appears to be the screen hinges. The screen support is super rugged also.

Sounds like this could be the mount for me.
