Just wondering which is a bigger concern for an average Joe's 80 ... overheating when going slow/crawling or at speed???

Slow/crawling.

I had a fan clutch that would not lock up at all (fluid shot), never even noticed it driving around. Definately noticed it wheeling though!

Would these vents be problamatic in deep water situations? Something to consider at least.

No more problamatic than the giant hole in the front of your engine bay. :hillbilly:

I think it would be harder to get a good bow wake since the water and air pressure would flow out the vents instead of having an air pocket form in the bay.

Remember we're talking about a fairly small hole here. This would actually be better for a bow wake than having hood vents, as it's positioned lower in the engine compartment, and plenty of people with hood vents have done water crossings without issues.

If you are really concerned about it, get a little magnetic sheet, and slap it over the vent before you do your crossing.

that is a good point, especially given that there is air sucked into the filter from nearby IIRC.

Pretty high up though, would need some fairly deep water.

Adding a snorkel would cure the problem. Plus the hole for the vent would make it easy to reach back 2 snorkel bolts that are a PITA. :D

I have been looking for one of those air spoilers for my back window, where do you get one of those?
AZ

Again love this idea, I think I'll start data recording so when I go down this road I can tell everyone what i find on the scan gauge. JT

Any update on differences in underhood temp?

I'm monsta lining my rig this weekend and may move forward with these vents if they are functional. Btw, highway speeds are just as important to me - living in Houston TX you've gotta drive 2 hours to do anything remotely cool.

If the truck needed underhood vents for cooling purposes, Toyota would have designed the truck with them. Put me down as one who thinks this mod is stupid, and looks like crap. Add to that the fact that you are taking parts from a Land Rover and putting them on a Toyota!!! Sacrilege. Why dont you just add a big Bentley grille to the front so you can really get some airflow and look like a douche. Sorry, just my opinion; I never thought I would see something like this on Mud. I would drive it without fenders at all before I drove it with freakin Land Rover vents cut into them.

I think It looks ok on your truck but definitely not my style. Props for the mod, don't worry I won't flame you like this douche^^^^^:flipoff2:

Wow Stu, you've got some serious anger management issues. You do realize the original thread is 4 years old.

All I care about is reducing the underhood temp & Louvers look ghey IMO. This is much better IMHO, however, I don't want to look like Jose Sanchez rockin the 90's civic with 3 chrome Maserati gills taped on the fender.

Hey hey... easy there with the name calling.

It represents each time the car hit VTAAAK and beat that 3FE LC he didn't know was actually not racing him.

I was going to pop a joke about defecating on an LC with an LR part, but looks like that's been taken care of by someone who obviously uses nothing less than JDM Unicorn tears to cool & lube their 'Yota. If the Infallible T was so brilliant about His creation's design, He'd truly would have come up something better than a 50 year old engine to power a newly redesigned 4700 lb truck, that doesn't also alternate as my morning egg and toaster oven at the first red light to work, along with making the local Ricer club slap on more 'kill' stickers....

On a serious note, I need to see if there is some way short of hacking up the body work to cool the engine bay. It is ridiculous how hot the engine bay gets just driving about. I cannot imagine Toyota really thought it was OK to have blistering temperatures be acceptable especially when their product is used and abused in sunny places like Africa.

I think it looks a little weird but I'm not gonna judge. I wonder what 60 series fender vents would look like on an 80, though.

To tell the truth I'm tempted to put a subaru hood scoop on my truck just to keep the back half of the engine cooler.

 Who needs HBO if you got threads like this and these type of responses.....Don't get me wrong, ^^^^^ is funny as hell...lol...Love the rig, same wheels and tires as mine but vents are not my cup of tea as well....

I lol'd at the hater comments, I subscribed to this thread back in 2009 because I was interested to see what kind of heat reduction the OP would get with this mod. I don't understand why people are hating on him so much. The dude went out and tried something new, took the risk of cutting his pristine fenders, and made a seemingly functional mod that blends in well with the 80 series lines. While i generally consider myself a Toyota purist, I could care less that the vents are from a rover. Hell, my hood vent above my supercharger is from a Chebby lumina, how ghetto is that? I wrote off chebby's nearly a decade ago, but the reality is that the Chebby vent is very functional and looks decent to boot.

Props to the OP for venturing out and trying something new. What would mud be if it weren't for people that think outside the box?
