May has welcomed a new shop project.

One family owned 1981 FJ40 out of Louisiana .....

My buddy Deryl contacted me and told me a tale about this great FJ40 he helped revive a few years back for one of his customers to give to his customers daughter.

They whipped it back into shape, added a Vintage Air system and they got a few good years of use out of it.

Recently they reached out to him about it not running and he contracted me about a good candidate for a Sniper Install.

I eased down to Louisiana last month and grabbed it and put it in the queue.

April 2.

Had to build that Troopy and a FZJ79 first.

Yesterday my son was around so he helped me maneuver this thing into the main shop. It's been occupying the Duramax shed.

First look and impressions.

Dirty.

Fully smogged (no reason it would not run)

Roof is leaking and it rusted a bit of the top and killed the headliner m

Last registration was 22 years ago but hopefully it's run since then

There is some rust and some dents but those of you that know me know that's the way I prefer a 40.

My plan is to kill the rust and soak it in fluid film.

I've got 3 days on this thing to clean it up and see what parts I need.

Strip parts for powder.

Order parts.


Then I'm off about 8 days for a trip.

When I get back I'll have everything I need to put this thing back together and make it a runner.

So today I decided to pull the fiberglass cap off and prep it for the new headliner. Treat the rust.

Then I pressure washed everything outside and in the engine bay after a heavy soaking with Zepp purple.

That s*** really works great. I think once I get all the smog junk out we will see a beautiful engine under all this grease and grime

Once inside I dropped the hood and spent the day deep cleaning the paint then polishing and waxing. It really really popped nicely.

Tomorrow I'm going to tear the motor apart. Make a pile for powder. Desmog. More cleaning.

The old story about being one broken bolt away.....

Man. The air pump bolt was completely seized. It took a smorgasbord of tools to get that ****er out

I'm bleeding. That's time and 1/2 for that hour. Bleed tax.

Firm believer that every bolt/nut needs anti seize compound or thread locker.
I also like heat and several days pretreatment with Kroil. Impact therapy can be helpful to help break the bonds. Also trying to tighten first, then rock back and forth.

Fully stripped. I truly feel sorry for people that have to drive and maintain Land Cruisers with all that garbage on them.

Went a bit deeper. The exhaust gasket looked terrible so I went ahead and broke it all down and got a Remflex in there. I'm going to take the intake for deck and powder.

Today I took the roof cap to the headliner guy. Then I dropped off all the stuff for powder.

Got the plugs and such installed for the desmog.

Did a valve job

Added the DUI distributor and changed the oil.

I'm back. Great week in Grand Cayman with my redhead. She won a sales award and we thoroughly enjoyed being worthless for a week.

I dispatched the Wizard to pick up the hard top. It's ready and my son is headed over in a few to see his mother so he will help me set it on.

In the meantime I got the new battery tray in and the new battery

Weatherstrip on the doors and across the top of the hardtop and windshield

Some new mats

Starting in on the sniper. Went to put the temp sensor in and no fluid came out. It was clogged. I was able to get it free flowing with a pick. This is the #1 reason I like to put the sensor here. If it's clogged here then your motor won't cool correctly.

I used the bolt on O2 that comes with the Sniper. There is not much space on this 1981 stock exhaust system.

I had a valve cover here so I got it on. All the rest of the stuff from PowderKeg will be done soon.
