I stumbled across this today on the internet.
RV Air Conditioner KoolerAire RV Air Conditioning

The background first: I'm moving to Okinawa, Japan. Before that I'm gonna drive from San Diego, CA to Arkansas to visit family. I've done this a dozen times before. So what's different? My 12 yo German Shepherd is going along as usual, except she's much older and now has cancer. This will be her farewell voyage with the family.

I'm taking my 2002 Double Cab that has a Leer cap on the back. I just added a constant 12v source planning to hook up a small fan to run for her to help keep things cooler. I'm wondering if this thing would do better than a fan on it's own.

Any idea if thing works or not? Maybe it will cool things down just enought to make it easier on the dog.

Fire away.

You will be stopping for ice a lot. Even keeping our ice chest closed and wrapped in wool blankets we go through 10# of ice in 4 hours when it gets really hot. If your blowing hot air over the ice it will be gone between gas stops.

1) Backseat will be filled with small creatures called children.

2) I don't mind the ice expenditure if it will help take a few degrees of the temperatrue.

I recently purchased a small MV1 Swamp Cooler and it definitely works in low humidity environments for spot cooling. It can probably last about 4-6 hours with the optional water reserve bag. My only complaint is that it is relatively noisy but this wouldn't be relevant in the back of a truck.

Of course, it doesn't work as well as an actual AC unit but if there is less than 50% humidity, you can expect a 10-15 degree temperature drop directly in front of the unit.
