there were a lot of things at play in this picture.

#1 - the rack is mounted to two yakima feet. I am not sure they are they perfect for the truck and the rain gutters.
#2 - there was a ton of weight up there for only 4 feet (2bars). There was a spare tire, a long hi-lift, a drive shaft and maybe even a sway bar to list a few things.
#3 - There was some oil in the rails. Why? Because the hi-lift was rusty, so john lubed it and when it went to the roof, it dripped, and settled in the rails.
#4 - John was not shy about getting up that rock face. As you can see by the rear end hitting, it was pretty steep and there was some hopping on the way up IIRC.

I am sure given the correct about of feet and no oil that the Yakima or Thule feet would be fine. I know that I am not going to use them though.

anyone use one

Beaufort-fj60,
I have one of his racks. Really nice flooring. Just finished the painting process, and the rack will go one the truck this weekend. It will initially be mounted with Yakima supports but will later switch over to some Con-ferr feet.

I got a 4" height full length rack.

ditto on 4" instead of 6". I got a steal on my 6" wilderness but if I had the choice I'd buy a 4". I've been stuck in a parking garage were I could have benefited from the 4" rack.

Conferr

I have had a Conferr roof rack for 13 years and it has been a workhorse. I've loaded it in excess of 500lbs for long camping trips and it's been great. I have the 4' length and had a custom expanded metal floor put in as it only came with the 3 major support cross bars. Other than that....no regrets and I'd do it again. I can email pix if you'd like.

I have a yakima rack and a thule rack. The thule is great for lightweight things like skis (at most) but I would not use it for anything. On the otherhand I have two Yakima cross bars on my FJ55 and there are very very strong. For a full size rack (whihc I have) am planning on using them but will use 4. I weight 220 lbs and can do pullups on the yakima bars, I don't I'll ever use Thule again. I bought the bars used but they are perfect with wide mounts and a good clamp. And they are lockable... Here is a photo, I wheel with them all the time even with tree branches and such that have even taken out wipers before but not the racks... So that is my $.02... :)

OK OK...you guys have had your fun...thats MY rig. The rack is some POS that came with the truck when I purchased it. It sits on Yankima bars and feet. However, the reason that happened was because spray lubricant ended up dripping off a DS I put in the rack, and ended up running down the rain rails.

The oily water got underneith the feet, and caused the rack to slip off!!! Plus, I have the rack way overloaded with a spare tire, 2 extra DS's, Hi lift, ect...

I'll admit though, it was a comical moment!!!

I second the notion of the Tradesman rack. I have a full length one that fits on the 60 like it was made for it. The real bonus is that the feet are adjustable and also fits my 80 series. It is super stout, and not all that heavy without the mesh floor.

Bostonfj60-Great picture, I'm glad you can see the humor now. I even had to save that pic on my computer. I have a Yakima rack I sometimes put on the 60, but the most weight it ever carries is 3 bikes. It definitely is not made to carry a fullsize spare and a highlift.

I use the Wilderness rack and keep my spare on there as well. Can't go wrong.

I have a Thule rack with 3 crossbars. I carry a 32 inch spare and a high lift up there. I have had no problems so far, and I have even driven the truck on a dirt road once. It was really bumpy.

con-ferr question, are you using the short or tall con-ferrs

hds-8 short (3"-4.5")
hdt-8 tall (6"-8")
hd-8 (6") they list this one for using with there rack

These are available through Summit. I've picked up a set of the HDS-8 but haven't had a chance to put them to use yet. Plan is to build, or have built, a rack.

Wilderness rack!

if youre looking for sumthn VERY durable and on the cheaper side, go with Wilderness. if youre looking for sumthn lighter, and wayyyyyy more costly, get the Aussie one from Slee. My Wilderness is a kickass rack. its a heavy m'fer, but who cares? ive loaded mine down with wayyyyy more than 500lbs. ive put canoes, lock boxes, gear, and all kinds of other s*** up der. i dare that thing to come off! -sean

oh, and BTW, 6" sides as opposed to 4" sides to me really have no differences. what the hell is 2" gonna do in a parkin garage? dont you know by now, cruisers dont go in garages?

Very cool that you use Yakima bars. Those are the exact same ones I have and as mentioned before, very very strudy. However I wouldn't use the set of Thule bars I have though, even though I like some of their accessories more, like their ski racks...
