I don't want to spam the thread, but I have an extra new in box Kaon shelf for sale in Denver (along with a literal full build of parts for sale if you follow the other links in the thread). Local pickup only unfortunately!

I'll buy the Kaon shelf. Direct message sent.

I couldn't find a 22mm hole saw, instead ordered a 23mm from Amazon
Looks good! For future reference, a 7/8" hole saw is 22.2mm, and likely easier to find locally.

The non-HE dual cup holders arrived today, so I now have the HE and non-HE version side by side to compare. Somewhat interestingly, the holes for the screws that mount the cup holder to the rear quarter trim panel are spaced differently. The outer 2 holes are the same, but the position of the middle one is different. I won't know what the situation is until I take the quarter panels off to investigate, but I wonder how much of the quarter panel is cut out in the hump area on the HE's (hopefully just the hole for the bolt). I suspect I can get away with mounting the non-HE version with just the 2 outer screws rather than drilling another hole (assuming the quarter panel isn't just open in that area. Obviously, the holes for the upper 3 screws would leave open holes, but it shouldn't be difficult to find something to plug them with that will look decent. Next step is to find some time to pop the big panels off...

Alternately, attach something to replicate the existing boss from the HE version onto the Non-HE version. I'm not sure what would bond to the plastic, but it would add some stiffness to that area.

Yeah, that's a possibility. If nothing else, a piece of wood could be attached with screws from the top. If black screws are used they would be pretty discrete. But I'll just have to wait and see what is under the main quarter trim panels when I take them off. If most of the hump area is open, I'll probably just want to cut a section out of the HE cup holders. If only a hole for the bolt is there, then I'll just want to plug any of the 3 upper screw holes that aren't covered by the Kaon bracket with something (that will be easy to take care of).

Oh, yea. You said that before, but I didn't picture the possibility that there's nothing there! I have the small (free) panels, and haven't looked yet how they might fit. I'd imagined simply slotting the hump part to slide them in behind, but they might stick out further than that. Waiting for warmer weather....

Yeah, slotting them might work well. You would probably have to eliminate at least one of the screws holding the hump area on, but that probably wouldn't be a huge problem. Whoever gets their quarter panels off first will need to provide some photos of what is behind the humps :).

Hi all. I was installing the side panels and mucked up one of my captive nut assemblies. Does anyone know a quick source for said hardware?

I think I am going to go this way also. I like the E50 mount location. Suggest you go to the regular clips or just one of the rubber quick release things. I use 2 E50 clips and its just grab and go, single action to deploy.

I had it mounted elsewhere using the regular clips but they aren't secure enough and it kept working loose on trail. I would be worried about that or having it fly off in a sudden stop. I may go with a single quick fist, but I need once size down from what I have. The quick fists are pretty easy to open as it is, but the bigger issue is trying to train the kids on how to use it.

I keep one e50 in each of the front doors too.

I broke down and ordered my Kaon shelf a couple days ago; I was really hoping they were going to get back in stock while they had the 10% sale a week or two ago, but they never were. I ordered the large side panels thinking I'd wait and install them down the road after I worked up the courage to do the first "permanent" modification and drill a hole in a panel, but I've been thinking I may go ahead and install them.

What I did want to do was keep it so I could remove and re-install the panels if I desired. Given the two self tapping screws for the lower bracket I am opting to try something which I haven't seen posted here yet and I'm going to install two small 1/4-20 rivnuts to use with some button heads instead of those screws. Will report back upon completion, but after watching a YouTube video earlier of someone putting a rivnut on some cardboard I am cautiously optimistic

Also stealing the E50 idea from above--thank you!

Honestly, after doing the install, I wouldn’t worry about it. You can use something like this for the big holes:

Amazon product ASIN B07HZ11N6M
and for the screw holes, you just use a nice, automotive pan head trim screw and screw in the hole. They are in a place that nobody would ever notice a small black pan head screw.

I should also add that I did not receive self-tapping screws. Just plain old screws. The instructions were to mark the holes once you got everything fit correctly and then drill pilot holes.

I just went to order mine with the big molle panels and the shipping quote was 419 AUD ($300 USD). Ouch! Makes the whole thing about $700 USD. Can't make myself click on "process order"...

That's what I struggled with too, but you have to remember you're essentially ordering two separate parts and paying shipping on them from the other side of the world.

Looking at similar parts, Victory 4x4 sells a universal roof shelf ($350) and side molle panels ($220). They ship free so you're looking at about $570 to your door. The Kaon is around $700 so you're basically getting the same parts and paying $130 to ship them from Australia to the US which isn't that unreasonable given the size. However, the biggest difference for me that made it ultimately worth it was installation procedure for the Kaon panels over the Victory which basically requires disassembling all of your rear trim.

I do like the idea of grabbing a couple of those 7/8 caps to fill the holes when it's off. The thing I was assuming would be a problem is that once I install and remove the screws a few times they wouldn't hold nearly as well. I figure a couple rivnuts, while overkill, would provide a relatively polished install befitting of a Land Cruiser. I’ve always loved the phrase “anything worth doing is overdoing.”

Love the rivnut idea!
I was thinking the same… please keep us updated and be sure to upload some pic & possible instructions!
