I changed the oil in my wifes car and forgot to pull the drain pan out. she drove off to work and carried the pan all the way down the driveway. We had a nice black streak in the driveway after that. Doh! Never back into the garage to do an oil change!
 
You think that is bad. When I was about 16 my dad bought an new Renault and I offered to do the first oil change on this new car. I added the right amount of the right oil, the problem was that I had drained the gearbox! Very blued cogs but the garage did salvage it.

A buddy of mine did that to his brand new Subaru. Thankfully he noticed while he was trying to fill the oil that something was up. He was pissed because he had to then buy tranny fuild, fill the tranny AND still change his oil and he was doing it in his snow driveway in Denver.

I think it probably came from the factory with the blued cogs. ;) Admit it, you were just trying to save your dad the heartache of owning and repairing a Renualt.
 
Whenever I've had a couple of tasks that lookd sequential and I tried to minimize my movement / maximize productivity etc. and thought I had the system down pat, I've sometimes made a glaring mistake.

Haste makes waste.

Actually, the drain pan under the 93 by sheer coincidence was the 19 quart one, so I was about maxed out. The smaller one only holds 10, so I would have had a nice Exxon Valdez in the garage.

Reminded me of another self-engineered pimp I did to myself when I read the exploding quart story.

Mountain bikers will know about White Lightning - a nice chain lubricant that withstands dry dusty conditions, etc. I'd bought a black Audi Quattro and had it home from the dealer for about 30 hours. It was parked in the garage and I was cleaning my chain for a ride. The White Lightning clogged up and I could not get it to yield any lube. Clock's ticking and I've got a clean but unlubed chain and the guys are gonna be here any minute. I put the plastic squeeze bottle on the ground and place increasing pressure on it. In disbelief that it is still not yielding a drop with a LOT of pressure on it, I put my full weight on it. BLAM! The entire bottle's contents nail the Audi across the hood, front bumper and windshield. Unbelievably tenacious stuff. Fully a month later there was still residue on it.

And a genuine quart of oil story. Flew in to Salt Lake with some buddies and borrowed a Suburban from Larry Miller (owns a lot of car dealers in SW). Skied, had a great time. Washed the Suburban and a block from the dealership a quart of oil appears out of nowhere. I swerve to miss it and the guy in the lane next to me decides to turn suddenly and explodes the quart all over the Suburban. Unbelievable timing!

When I first started my 4wd mechanic apprenticeship I was told to drain the oil from a OZ HJ47, so I grabbed an oil drain tray (about 1 gallon capacity) dropped the drain plug and went away to do another job, of course 2h motors hold a fraction more than 1 gallon!:doh:
 
Ohh, that's so close to what I did today.....

First oil change in my new 80, grabbed the drain pan, had loosened the drain plug but hadn't taken it right out, realised the total drain pan held 6L, had 11.5 to come out.... my new clean coolant tray just got dirty :)

2nd close moment was when emptying the old oil into the 20L drum the fresh stuff had come out of, suddenly wondered if the tap at the bottom was turned off :eek: Luckily it was...

Other than a tight filter needing a bit of snadpaper, everything went smooth :cool: Trucks driving quieter than ever, revving a bit free'er, she's all good.

I'd forgotten how grotty Diesel oil was though :doh:

Yup on the White Lightning story. Kinda related, My father collected convertable Mazeratti's. I was at a nieghbors house when I hear him yelling for me. Go running to the garage to find him standing there red in the face. We had storage shelves in the front of the garage. I had two cans of paint and varnish remover, thick gell stuff. He shook one and the cap was not on tight. You guessed it, all over the hood of his best show car. Worst part of it was I was dumb enough to say, "Who shakes a can of paint and varnish remover?" Ouch!

Exxon Valdeze? First time I changed the oil on my 914/6. Seperate the hose( @ 1" ida) below the dry sump, Whoosh....

Are all of these yarns stories spun around the campfire at MOAB?

Mine...Scored my LX450 in July...had the dealer do oil change number 1. I did the second a few months later. Had an 8 qt pan, figuring I've burned/leaked enough to get down to around 6 qts. HA! IdahoDoug's Exxon Valdez oozes from my garage floor now! :mad: Same oil change...first on an FZJ80 (after reading posts here about tightening the filter), got the filter strap on the filter, and turned about 1/4 or a bit less, after spinning into contact with the adapter. Tried to change it out a month ago....was re-introduced to the concept of poking a screwdriver through the oil filter can. :doh: That new filter? Hand tight only! ;)
