This route takes you through some of the most varied terrain in Montana and Wyoming. This has it all, from high alpine passes to deep red-rock canyons to deserts, wild horse herds, and even a cave with ice that never melts.
This trail is easily accessible to stock rigs unless you're on street tires and have very low-hanging side steps. None of the obstacles have a legitimate bypass, but I've not found any to be particularly challenging or even require a spotter, though we may find one or two spots that need it. There are a few tight, narrow sections, and we do have a good possibility of running into some side by side traffic.
In the spirit of running things backwards this year, we will run this route in the opposite direction from our 2025 run. We'll start by heading up to the big Ice Cave, where we'll stop for a look and to cool off before carrying on up to the summit of the Pryors. We'll crest the mountains and begin dropping down via Sykes Ridge, the more difficult portion of the trip. From there, we can pop over to Devil's Canyon overlook for a nice view and a spot to have lunch, then back onto dirt, where we'll cross the desert area once again and follow Burnt Timber Ridge back to the old homesteader's cabin. We are just about guaranteed to see wild horses, direct descendants of horses brought to North America from Hernan Cortes in the early 1500's.
I do plan on camping this time round, and anyone interested can join me in exploring a shorter bonus run on Sunday, where we'll head up into the canyons on the opposite side of Bighorn Lake.
Hope to see you there!

I believe I will be maybe pulling in late thoWho all is camping friday?
Recently found out you can port BDR routes from the web and it will show you the whole route along with pins for points of interest that don’t always show up on onX by itself you can also put it in its own folder to avoid map clutterI finally ponied up for OnX Offroad. Does anyone have this route already mapped out on that software? I would like to log it in and mess with it before getting there. I am hopefully able to join if there is still a spot? I am looking at camping on either end if possible and would like to try the mapping to find a good spot. Thanks in advance-
Bummer! We'll take lots of picturesSorry guys, but I am not gonna be able to make it at this point due to some work schedules and something that came up. Have a great time!
The route is more or less a loop, so the end point of the run is not far from the rendezvous point.@WreckDiver1321
Hey Tom,
I'm wondering if we'll be returning to the starting point on Sat eve. or if you plan to stop somewhere else. I have to be back in BZN Saturday night and I'm trying to budget my driving time.
TIA - Chris
It would be so great to join this one but I can’t swing it this weekend. I hope you all have a blast! Take pics for the peanut gallery here at home.
Ain’t gonna make it shucks
Tom,Thanks everyone for coming! It was great to hang out and show everyone around my neck of the woods. All of you were so great with my kids running around and all of us had a blast.
Glad you all enjoyed it as much as I did!
