Hey Everyone,

Just wanted to shout out that this run will definitely be on June 21st (fiancee is out of town).

I had intended to perhaps do an early morning run into the 'backway to Crown King' but that was before I went to visit Murph and the guys at Camelback this weekend.

I traded in my Tacoma for a '14 T4R so now I'm going to need a stock friendly run, is the above trail do-able in a stock vehicle, anyone know?

If not I'll get a few more trail options put together this week and post it up.

Cheers,

Kirk

Back way to CK - via Cow Creek - seemed stocker friendly with options for playing by taking any of the obviously more challenging bypasses, and even some of those were friendly enough for my stock FJC, though I did test a rock rail on one rather mid-level bypass I decided to try out.

The degree of the routes general unfriendliness was limited to one jarring cattle guard drop off > 10", and a few dips where I bounced down onto minor rocks with my rock/brush guard. My FJ has a 9.6" GC spec.

Kirk, I think your new 4Runner should be fine up the CK trail - especially since youre putting on the LT Nitto Terra Grapplers instead of the stock tires. Ending up in the pines will be nice and cool ~

Thx again for giving CBT a chance to get your new 4Runner for you - I look forward to watching all your plans for it unfold over time. It is a beautiful rig!

Yup I think we'll give the Backway to Crown King a go (gain some elevation and cool off!!), I feel meeting up for 7:30 and rolling out at 8 is a good time, but I also feel that this particular trail might be crowded at this time, What do people think? I was maybe looking at meeting up at the McDonald's parking lot
3140 W Carefree Hwy
Phoenix, AZ 85086
Carefree Hwy & I-17
for 6:30 am try to roll out for 7. Let me know I'm open to suggestions, Thanks!

Ok so I did a pre-run this afternoon I just got back, I think I'll nix the 7am roll out and aim for 8am. Also going to change the meet up location.

Meet at 7:30 aim to roll out at 8 or just before at 33.797835, -112.144493 (it's a small dirt parking lot just west of I-17 across the road from the shooting range). The area of McDonalds and the Chevron is a bit of a zoo and confusing, I thought I'd fill up here thinking gas would be cheaper than the city, I was wrong, Regular was ~$3.90.

We'll follow the route to Bradshaw Foothills stage area, -33.95035,-112.31329, to air down...for those that are running behind you can anticipate we'll spend some time here so I'll monitor the radios 146.46 on Ham my call sign is KG7DEM, or Channel 22 on CB.

I didn't go far on the trail, only went as far as 33.96887,-112.31429 but it was 97 F whereas when I got back home to Tempe 1.5 hours later it was 107 F at the house, at that point I was at ~2100 ft and from my research we should be hitting around 7000 ft so it'll be at least cooler than the city for most of the day.

I'm looking forward to it! I hope to see a great turn out and of course we have the monthly meet the evening before!

A good dose of homemade CK fudge sounds really good right now. Count me in as a possible maybe - heavily weighted on the maybe side. Someone who should remain unnamed - Murf at CBT - worked on my truck recently and detailed it so well I felt bad even touching the door handles, and the footprints I've left on the floor mats are atrocious. So the idea of taking it somewhere there might be real dust involved seems like insane vehicular abuse. But the rig really needs to learn to be a truck again ... so this will be a good chance to reintroduce it to a dirt road.

Tim - you've now joined the dark clean side. bwahahaha

Ha Sounds good Tim, I know what you mean, try explaining to your fiancee you need to take a brand new T4R that was outfitted a little bit by Murf and his team, that has 100 miles total on it, on a dirt road to do a pre-run and return it looking not so clean and shiny.

Hoping to make it down from Flagstaff to join up for the day. We are also considering camping out Saturday evening, perhaps somewhere along the Old Senator Hwy.

Hi. We'd like to come on this CK run this weekend and camp Saturday night. Any recommendations for a good camp spot? Also, what permits do we need for this adventure? We'll be in a stock hundred...and without AT tires...will we be ok?

Turning out to be good run at a perfect time of year.

Lots of places to camp depends on how close you want to be to town/bar.
The town can be very entertaining on the weekend nights.

100 series should be fine taken all the bypasses

for permits call the county, the state, the usfs, and any other agency you can think of.... each one wants their nickel and none speak to one another. and then the sherriff will find the one you dont have and collect his share.

there isn't any helpful clearing house that has a list -- so you're pretty much on your own to figure it all out... a Public Trust Lands is always recommened, and any Forest you visit is subject to needing a pass, and certain areas of certain forests require additional special fee passes, and then comes the park and recreation passes if you actually plan to stop and turn off the engine for any reason. and i know i am missing a few.

No permits required to camp or travel in the CK area

Pretty sure a State Trust permit is required Phil. At least that was what I was told by the guy at the counter when I bought my permit and mentioned traveling dirt roads above Lake Pleasant. He could have been wrong.

We all should have SLT permits and annual Tonto passes anyway IMO. The permit and pass money helps.

With that said....

Not seeing it on the STL map

Never seen a sign in 35 years of making the trip

Wells book notes nothing

A local ATV rental company also said no

Phil - can you point to a downloadable copy of a MAP of state trust lands?

Here's all I can find: note point 19
http://www.azland.gov/programs/natural/pdfs/OHV_Brochure.pdf
Hieroglyphic Mountains Area/
Boulders Staging Area (Lake Pleasant)
BLM, Hassayampa Field Office, (623) 580-5500
www.blm.gov/az

Oh - and here's the STL caveat that will get you (knowing that there really isn't a 'detailed' map): checking the interactive map below, there sure looks like a lot of STL in and around CK. That or my color vision is messing with me (blue/purple look the same).

Q. How do I know if I am on Trust Land? Are there signs?

A. The Arizona State Land Department manages 9.3 million acres of land; of which roughly 8 million acres are available for some form of recreation or another. While the Department makes every effort to ensure that signage is well placed on Trust Land, limited resources make it impossible to place signs on every parcel much less every trail. Know before you go, and check your map.

Q. Where can I obtain trail maps?

A. The Land Department has not published a collection of ‘trail maps’, however, Surface Management Responsibility Maps that indicate where Trust Land is located may be purchased at the Public Records counter. Also, please check the ‘Places to Go’ tab for updates and view our Interactive Map Server for more information.

Anyway -- I'd have an STL permit if I drove on ANY dirt road in AZ. And wouldn't be surprised if someone told me you could be cited for using paved roads through STL areas.

Hope the link works:eek:

All I see are blocks of blue (maybe you call it pink, or purple,or aqua) that look like State Trust Lands all through the area around and north of Lake Pleasant...

Being color deficient sucks ...
